Solved Strange message

hello. when I am doing something on my computer, ie working with photo gallery, a message comes up "not responding". when this does happen my screen fades. eventually the 'not responding" does go away. This happens also with different programs that I am working on also. I have tried to find out why this happens and i really could not get an answer.

has anyone ever had a problem like this? if so, how was it resolved, and any suggestions about this. i
know this is something triviall thing but it is really annoying.
