Hi, hope someome can help me out with a very strange situation.

My laptop (a Dell Studio 17 running Windows 7 64 bit) had been working normally until last night, when I plugged my XBox controller into one of the USB ports. I've been using this controller on and off for over a year and have never had any problems with it.
When I plugged it in, the controller's 'player 1' light didn't come on and a second later my laptop's screen went black, then blue. It looked like a BSOD only it had no text, just rows and rows of horizontal, constantly changing coloured pixels. I disconnected the controller and tried pressing a few keys on the keyboard (which did nothing), and a few seconds later the laptop rebooted itself and displayed the "Windows did not Shut Down properly" dialogue.

I've had this laptop since 2011 and have never had a BSOD before. I'm not even sure if this qualifies as a BSOD as it had no text, and I'm not 100% sure the controller caused it. Windows Event Viewer seems to classify it as a BSOD regardless. The only other device I use with that USB port apart from the controller
is a Wacom tablet. I've tried plugging the tablet in today at it seems fine, but I'm too nervous to try the controller again at the moment.

I've attached the dm log collector file, hopefully someone can work out what happened here.

Hi Wixi.

I looked through the files and there is a problem with the XBOX controller driver so go here (<- click) and download the driver for your W7. I also noticed that your PC needs a BIOS update from here, I noticed that yours is almost a year old.

Please post back the results!

Cheers! /Boris :)

Hi BorisTheAnimal,

Thanks for the reply. The Xbox driver in the link is for the wireless controller. My one is a wired model, so I'm not sure if the driver would be compatible.

How do you install the BIOS file? Does it install like a regular download?

Thanks.

Hi Wixi.

Sorry must have been a wee bit tired when I replied. This is the one.

And luckily with Dell computers and laptops the BIOS update is yes just like a normal program installation, though you might want to close all other open apps when you do it because at some point the system will automatically restart and install the update and then boot you back in to Windows.

Cheers and sorry for the wrong link once again!

Hi BorisTheAnimal,

I've just tried running the XBox controller driver and got this message:

Is it worth uninstalling and reinstalling the software as a whole?

Thanks.

Hm well I would do this:

Navigate to Device Manager and expand the XBOX Peripherals and right click on the XBOX controller and select uninstall and reconnect the controller and see if that helps. And while you are in the Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers to see if there are any exclamation marks in there.

Oh and I've also noticed that it's best to always keep it in the same port.

Hi BorisTheAnimal,

I've followed your instructions and so far everything seems okay.
There were no exclamation marks in the Device Manager. I always use the same port for the controller, it's actually the only available port as the other one always has the printer connected to it.
