Strange Security Behaviour

I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Malewarebytes installed. I have them set to
do a daily scan at 19.00.
However, when I check Action Centre security status I am informed that my system
is "potentially unprotected as a scan has not been done for some time". I have often only completed a scan a day earlier. Malwarebytes is also telling me that it is out of date by a number of days and needs updating.
System Health still reports that it cannot detect any Anti-Virus on my PC even though
I have gone through the usual suggested means of not monitoring this. It does not seem to work. Any ideas on what might be going on ?

Don't worry, if you are sure that those AVs are working and up to date. Action Centre is not reliable.

By all means update MSE within the program or windows update. If you have the free MalwareBytes, you have to update it manually. It has an option to check for them at each start.
Configure Action Center to you have an AV that you will monitor. Make sure the Windows firewall is turned on.

Adding to Britton30's reply, you should not have both MSE and MBAM set to scan at the same time as, in addition to slowing the machine, that could result in conflicts. In fact, if anything is detected, it is advisable to do a shutdown/restart between scans.

If you are using an automatic file/registry cleaner it might be deleting the logs on a regular basis, removing the evidence of its previously being run.

MalwareBytes has also told me the definitions are out of date 2 days after I updated it. and system Health used to tell me I didn't have any Anti-Virus installed when I used to use avira, this changed and I no longer get these warnings when I got rid of Avira, and switched to the Full version of Comodo IS which includes antivirus, instead of just using Comodos Firewall and D+.

But Windows should definitely detect MSE, and you should not be getting this warning.

MalwareBytes will automatically scan the files being scanned by other engines, regardless, If you dont want it to scan when your scanning with other engines than you have to disable Protection, I have never run into any issues with this, In fact I have had times wile working with a VM after plying with viruses for testing purposes, and as I was scanning with supperantispyware, Malwarebytes found threats superantispyware failed to find, they both found threats, I just selected the restart later on the window that said the machine must be restarted to remove the threats, so both of them removed the threats at the same time when I chose to restart the virtual machine. But I did uncheck duplicates found from malwarebytes and only kept selected the threats selected that SAS failed to find.
