My computer always gets stuck on the 'Starting Windows' screen when I have my printer plugged up to my power surge protector. I currently am on Windows 7. This also happened on my last computer which had XP. Is there something that I can do so I don't have this problem anymore. Do I need to plug my printer into a separate outlet instead of into a surge protector or is there a setting or something that can be adjusted to stop this from happening.

This is my first post on this board obviously so I didn't know what section to put this in so I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong area.

It could be a power supply issue. however, when you say that your printer is plugged into the power outlet, is it also plugged into the computer? and is it a usb connection or parallel port?

If it is connected via a USB or parallel port I reckon this might be an older printer that is trying to use the wrong driver! Does the printer work on this PC at all.if so what sequence works for getting the printer and PC to be on at the same time?
Have you tried an alternative power source. I doubt it will make any difference but worth a try if only to eliminate that!

It is connected via USB to the computer. The printer does work on this PC. I have a surge protector where I have the printer, pc, modem, and router all plugged into it. When I first turn on the surge protector the monitor comes on and then I turn on the pc. The printer is turned off but plugged into the surge protector. Then the screen gets stuck on 'Starting Windows'. I have to unplugged the printer from the surge protector or turn on the printer to get the pc to move on from 'Starting Windows'

Check your boot device priority in the bios. If "removeable devices" or usb device are at the top, pull them down. Put cd/dvd drive at the top, followed by your hard disk drive. Save settings and exit. Restart computer with the printer plugged in as usual.

I will check it. How do I get to the boot device priority in the bios? I have not had to mess with this before.

There is usually a boot tab. If so, go to it, and the boot order should be there.

It's hard to give detailed instructions on navigating through the BIOS, as there are a ton of different ones.

Often the space and arrow keys are used.

I tried all of what was suggested and it didn't work. I moved the USB down on the boot priority and it didn't worked. I completely eliminated it from the boot process and it didn't work. I am wondering if it is because the printer is a little older. It is a Lexmark X5470 printer. My wife has a newer printer and her pc doesn't have this problem. If anyone has any other ideas I sure would appreciate it.

You don't say how old your printer is but that model is still in production.
I presume you have the Windows 7 driver installed for your printer? Have you tried installing the printer on your wife's computer (Try it when she's out in case you mess up her PC) Clutching at straws now but have you tried a different USB lead?

The printer is about 3-4 years old. I do have the windows 7 driver installed on the printer. I haven't tried it on my wife's pc. when you say different USB lead. Do you mean a different USB cable or plugging the cable into a different USB on the pc?
