Hello Gang,

I recently found out my school gives Ultimate 7 for free :D I am so excited! However, I don't know what I need to do in terms of DVD image burn... What is that exactly, and what do I need to do?

I am simply downloading the 64-bit 2.92 GB file onto my desktop. I saw one of Brink's tutorials to burn a .img onto a DVD, but I don't know what to do after that? I don't have to do a clean install do I? I just reformatted my machine a couple months ago and it is working flawlessly.

Thanks for you help!!!

You can save the download and make a disc out of it, you will want it someday.

Just enter the key in the anytime upgrade like logicearth said, it will do it's thing and you'll be good to go.

Hi there
Do as the other posters have suggested -- go for anytime upgrade and just enter the CD / DVD key. Installation will be automatic from the web. Will take around 10 - 15 mins (max) with decent Internet speed.

I'd STILL download the DVD image though -- you might want to re-install some time and you certainly should make a RECOVERY disk too.

Cheers
jimbo

There is just a couple of things that might be worth remembering.

If you upgrade to Ultimate, and then install SP1, and you have to re-install your operating system, make sure you re-install Home Premium first followed by the anytime upgrade to Ultimate, and then SP1.

If you re-install HP then SP1, the anytime upgrade will fail meaning you would need to uninstall SP1 before you can upgrade.

I only mention it because it happened to me.

Of course, if you create an image backup when you've upgraded you'll have no such worries. Just restore from the image if the need arises.

Also, if your updates are up-to-date before you upgrade, the process will only take a few minutes. If your updates aren't up-to-date they will be downloaded during the anytime upgrade and will increase the time needed accordingly.

You should also keep in mind that the Free Student Edition is only for when you are a student, once you are no longer a student, you are legally required to uninstall the free student version.

With that said, will MS come after you for not? probably not,
but don't be surprised if one day it comes up as Not Genuine.

It's funny you mention that Tepid, my school's site did ask when I would approximately graduate... I still have two years to go, so I answered with 2-3 years before I graduate. Hopefully I will have Windows 8 by that time.
