Sudden crashing; no BSOD

Windows 7 64-bit Intel Core i7 with 2 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM.
Purchased with an HP in November 2009. (No current access to more detailed information.)
OS was reinstalled in August 2010 following a bad hotfix.

This story begins about 10 days ago. What's happening is I'm having sudden, inexplicable crashes of the entire computer, an immediate shutdown (though during this time there have been 1 or 2 isolated blue screens also).

Triggers: The original problem occurred when I tried to open a scheduling program for my church that I've been using for 6-9 months (TMS Explorer). There was a BSOD. But when Windows came back up, it was EXTREMELY sluggish. After much trial and error, I ended up doing a selective startup, disabling all programs and services, then re-enabling them one by one. The Zimbra Desktop email client appeared to be the cause. (This seems quite odd since I've been using it with no problem for 1-2 years. I uninstalled it, anyway.) During this time I also purchased and attempted to run SpinRite, but it froze 20+ hours into the process, likely due to my 1TB HDD being too large.

After this, things seemed to be working fine. The next problem occurred when I tried to play Civilization IV on Steam with my son. We were going through the tutorial when it simply and abruptly crashed. We reproduced this error two more times in the tutorial, then another time within the main game itself. All of this reinforced an early belief that it was an update to Steam on March 14 that was a trigger to the problem. I did not uninstall Steam, but I did disable it on startup.

Since then, however, in the last 24 hours, the system has crashed three times. The first two times I was playing music through iTunes and browsing with Chrome, things I have done dozens of times in the past. The third time was a short while ago; this time it was just Chrome that was open: a couple of tabs, watching a YouTube video.

Attempted fixes (some of these attempted after reading this forum):
- Updated Microsoft Security Essentials. (It hadn't updated itself in a month, for some reason.)
- SpinRite version 6 (red screen error partway through, as explained above)
- Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes. Antivirus was conflicting with it for awhile, but it eventually finished successfully and reported no problems.
- Downloaded SeaTools 2.22; haven't run it yet.
- Downloaded Memtest86 and ran it after the latest crash. It got about 40% of the way through the scan, then abruptly crashed the computer. On a reboot, I saw a BSOD; after it recovered, I opted for a normal start to Windows, then had the abrupt crash again. On a second reboot, I again saw a BSOD; after it recovered, I tried to boot into Safe Mode but got the Startup Repair instead. Startup Repair suggested a System Restore; I agreed. Less than a minute later, there was another abrupt crash. The desktop is currently off; I'm on my laptop at the moment.

I am off work today and open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

There are two files in the Minidump folder, both corresponding to BSOD. When trying to send them to a compressed folder, however, I am told "File not found or no read permission." Shall I upload without zipping?

Edit: Never mind. I figured out the problem. ZIP file attached.

Edit 2: Also in the middle of all of this, I updated to Windows 7 SP1. Windows Update wasn't working correctly for this so I had to install it manually. Both for this and for Malwarebytes, I had to disable Microsoft Security Essentials, which I can't remember ever having to do previously when installing software.

In both dump files captured, wininit.exe is crashing - however, the first crash is documented as a resource issue ("not enough storage is available to process this command" is the string on the stack), whereas the second one is indicating that "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect".

Are we sure the hard disk in this computer is working properly, and the RAM is OK?

- Downloaded Memtest86 and ran it after the latest crash. It got about 40% of the way through the scan, then abruptly crashed the computer. On a reboot, I saw a BSOD; after it recovered, I opted for a normal start to Windows, then had the abrupt crash again. On a second reboot, I again saw a BSOD; after it recovered, I tried to boot into Safe Mode but got the Startup Repair instead. Startup Repair suggested a System Restore; I agreed. Less than a minute later, there was another abrupt crash.

This result from Memtest86 was the really troubling one for me, and the reason I posted.

No, I haven't had another BSOD. I'm simply following the instructions that were outlined in your previous post. I haven't had the computer crash since this morning; it's an intermittent problem, apparently. But as I stated in the original post, what has been happening has been less BSOD and more sudden crashing, with no blue screen.

I suppose my next step should be to run SeaTools. Still not sure what the problem was with Memtest86.

To work on the issue with the RAM please run all 3 tests of Prime95 at least a couple hours each test

Just to be clear: When it says to "keep an eye" on my PC when this test is running, this means I actually need to be present, correct? That is, I can't let it just run overnight?

EDIT: I was mistaken. You can run Prime95 over night. Just watch the temps for the first 15-20 minutes and make sure they don't get to hot.

Two more crashes today. Both times the same sort of problem: watching a YouTube video, sudden crash, no BSOD, nothing in the Minidumps folder. I'm going to run SeaTools on my HDD this evening. But it seems to me like the problem might me the RAM. Is there any way to check that aside from yanking sticks and seeing if the problem reproduces (since Memtest86 crashed my computer, too)?

What report? I can't even get my PC to stay up reliably in Safe Mode, and I'm not getting blue screens.

I just tried to run Windows Memory Diagnostic. It crashed less than ten minutes in, just like Memtest86 had.

Then I suggest you start pulling out sticks of memory until the system boots. Without system reports it's really hard to see what's going on

Tested all of my RAM with Memtest86. All passed.
Tested my HDD with SeaTools. It found a couple dozen bad sectors and repaired them, after which it passed the test.
Have yet to run Prime95.
But I had another crash today, this time while my son was playing a different video game (Puzzle Quest: Galactrix).
I'm seeing a theme. These sudden crashes (no blue screen) have come generally with games or You Tube.
