sudden intermitent screen flicker problem

This extremely annoying problem started the other day after i ran an energy report, which btw was the first thing i had done on the computer that day. SO the energy report may or may not have something to do with it.
The problem could be referred to as several things really, jittering,
flickering, flashing, even kind of a bounce maybe....its just real quick, a split second at a time. Depending on what im doing, it can be as often as every 3 to 5 seconds, or just intermittently.


Heres a list of when the problem occurs.

1. Watching vidoes online. Hulu.com so far is the worst. Picture flickers every 3 to 5 seconds. Youtube much better, just every so often. Watched one full show on nbs.com. Didn't flicker once....!!????

2. Flickers in game loading screens but not in game. Thank god!

3. Also when I launch an app or maybe a video offline it'll flicker once as it launches.

Here's when it dosent occur.

1. In games. (outside of the loading screen of course)

2. Outside of watching video online there is no problem as far as browsing etc.

3. No flickering on the desktop, or when navigating though windows.

To fix the problem ive tried windows restore, and reinstalling my video card drivers. Neither fixed my problem. Outside of doing a reformat I dont know what else to do...can someone help plz!

My screen will also flicker once in a while, like when booting up just before my desktop appear. I also get the black screen for a second or two for no apparent reason. At first my heart would stopped when that happened but the screen comes back normal. It does feel like a video card setting problem. I have the Nvidia GEforce 8500GT.
I'm sure some updates will fix the problem soon, I hope.

I get a flicker but i get loads of Weird !s with faces on them and when i boot it goes black after the the cool bit on the bootup till the login screen

hmm yea your problem sounds a bit different than mine...I hope to whatever problem your having will be fixed with an update...would be nice.
My problem actually just went away on its own after a couple of days, then came back a day or so later!...then disappeared again another day later...so wtf!?

Flicker in taskbar

I get a flicker in the taskbar every once in a while. It's fairly distracting. I don't get in anywhere else on the screen or in any applications. Only in the taskbar (and often when a page in Firefox is loading).

Hello to DavidCo, and everyone else on the thread.

I am just guessing, but I think this is a problem with the CPU, or mobo.
Reasons:
This only occurs while something is loading.
Occurs when strain would be placed on the CPU (NOT video card. i.e. games)
Would seem to indicate motherboard in that the problem occurs with a screen flicker.

Now for a few questions and tests. DavidCo (or anyone else), does your motherboard have onboard video (as in another video plug up on the motherboard as opposed to down lower on the tower for a video card)?
If so, take out your video card, and use the onboard. If the flickering still occurs, then this would seem to indicate a CPU problem. If it is cleared up, then we need to try a new video card. If you have one, pop it in. If the problem still occurs, then it could be a motherboard problem. If it is fixed, then it may be a bad card (I don't believe that) or incompatibilities with hardware.

Alternatively, try pulling out ALL NON-ESSENTIAL HARDWARE, and try to replicate the problem. This means taking out all but the minimum RAM modules (and switching them out) as well as video cards (ONLY if there is onboard video), network hardware, anything.

This will seem like a long, boring process to just find the problem. But it is necessary to locate it. Once we find it, then we determine if the hardware is bad. That will be the easy part.

you guys try playing with the refresh rate? on lcd monitors the max is 60htz (so im told). could be any custom settings in the nVidia / ATi control panel. try resetting refresh rate, and any custom video settings to their default values.

I am a college student and have had a similar problem. Every time I am doing work while listening to music on YouTube or even using the internet, I get a split second freeze fdollowed by a screen flicker that lasts 3-5 seconds and then the screen reappears. I have noticed that this also causes a warning icon to appear in the task tray. The only possible problem I could possibly think of is that the virtual memory is too low. I have a feeling though that my thought is wrong.

Could this problem be linked or be the same problem as the OP's problem?

I am havng this constant flicker - and I only get it with LCD monitors. If I use my older monitor which is Non-LCD I have no problem.

What is the problem in LCD monitors that cause this to happend? It is ambient detection? I think the older monitor were much better as they did not cause this problem.

What happend when it flickers it goes from bright to dark which is why I suspect ambient detectionl I have two different monitors (both LCD) and they both have the same flicher.
