Sudden shutdown - Now system has some corrupted files

Hi Kaide,
wish i had an old comp like yours:cry:.
Thats a really good rig.

Thanks it's an oldy but a goody, served me well :)

MS has been throwing out some unusual driver updates lately, which have been causing graphics/Bios issues, have you downloaded any in the last couple of weeks?

Yes, I've had a couple of issues with updates actually.

First was after an auto update around a month ago, when I started my PC it couldn't find the operating system and I had to manually go into the Bios and choose the boot device every time to get windows to load, but then it mysteriously fixed it's self and started working normally again.

Second issue is this current problem, I believe there was an auto update just before my current issue.
I just noticed that when I restart the PC the Asus bios logo doesn't always show now like it normally does and I couldn't even enter the Bios with the usual hot key, it seemed to skip right past that and load windows.

Just at the point when normally the Bios logo would show up on the screen after start up, there is a message, but it flashes up for a split second so I can't read it, I think it mentioned "PCI" but can't be 100%, it then proceeds to load windows with the current problem.

This morning I've had to restart many times to try and get into the Bios to check the information you requested such as the Bios version, eventually it showed up and let me in with the hotkey, but 9 times our of 10 it doesn't show and just skips to loading windows.

ASUS Exclusive Features :
- MemOK!
- AI Suite II
- Ai Charger+
- Anti-Surge
- ASUS UEFI BIOS EZ Mode featuring friendly graphics user interface <<<<---------------
- USB 3.0 Boost
- Disk Unlocker

The above is from the spec sheet for that motherboard,
can you check the settings for arrowed please.

I've included a screen shot of the Bios (once it finally let me in) and it seems to be "EFI Bios EZ mode"
It seems to be an older version than you mention below though.
ss05.jpg

Did you run the other 2 identifiers/updaters from the links i provided earlier.
And we do need to update the USB3

The Asustek link doesn't seem to work, it just took me to their website.
But I did download and run Intel Driver Update Utility you linked and it just showed this one driver as seen in the screen shot here, I didn't download it or anything as I was sure if I should so wanted to check with you first?
ss06.jpg

Bios version should be 1110 and graphic 353.62

As seen in the image above the Bios version is 0501, not sure about the "graphic" as I couldn't see that information there.

And lastly the latest utilites,
Description GPUTweak2 Ver1.4.0.8
1. Improve: Multiple card stability.
2. Fix: Monitor error when FanConnect enabled. File Size 34.85 MBytesupdate
according to Asus

note if you have fanconnect enabled change to dissabled, any change

If the problem still persists after the above, enter Bios hit the Reset to default option.

Roy

I don't have anything like GPUTweak installed or any other utilities, as I installed a new hard drive some time ago and reinstalled windows 7. The name does ring a bell though so I think I may have had it on the original hard drive at some stage.

I also noticed some other strange behavior such as not being able to sleep the PC (the option is greyed out) and similar small things like this.

Should I try and enter the Bios again and reset to default as you mentioned above?

I have the feeling that those recent windows updates totally screwed something, as mentioned in my first post windows start up repair and the command prompt sfc /scannow both separately said some windows files were corrupt but couldn't fix them.

Sorry for all my questions and speculation but unfortunately my knowledge is very limited on these matters.

Thanks again for your help!
Kaide

Morning Kaide,
From what you've just said, i think somethings stuck in a loop?

Please update your Bios.

you mentioned earlier that you had some discs, Im heading for a clean install.
Getting you the OS is not a problem, but it would be handy if you have the Utilities disc Y/N?

Roy.

Good Morning Roy :)

A stupid question I'm sure but I've never had to do it before, so how would I go about updating the Bios?

Also I've had a look for the disks and unfortunately all I seem to have is the windows 7 disk.
Sadly I think the others disks were lost/left behind when I emigrated.

Yep I was just taking a look there as the Asus updater indefinitely tries to connect to their servers and won't update.
This thing is there are 9 different Bios choices under Windows 7 64bit, sorry to be a pain but could you advise which one I should use as I'm not sure.

Also some state they need Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver to a certain version for proper operation, not sure what that is though or if it's relevant to me.

Hi Kaide,
suspect its looping coz of the same reason.

Latest version for any update is ALLWAYS at the top.
(note beware of the comments re OS, some are XP/Vista only).

It is possible the Bios upgrade might clear the problem.

The links M07 posted keep a note of them they will come in handy.

Ok thank you to you both.

I downloaded the latest Bios and updated it via USB drive, it did update but upon restart I still have the same issues with the resolution and even upon reinstalling the graphics driver it doesn't seem to work.

I found I'm able to enter the Bios if I spam the delete key and can see it's updated but now the edge of the EZ bios window runs off screen so can no longer see all the options. If I don't spam the delete key on startup it seems to still skip the usual bios logo screen that would normally show and so on.

Are we at the stage of reinstalling windows?

Thanks again,
Kaide

Hi Kaide,
Unfortunately i believe after what we've done there is no other accepatable option.:mad:

Even thou you've done it before
Clean Install Windows 7

PLEASE DO NOT have any other HDD/SSD's devices attached during install.

To bypass the need to install 200+ updates, read post 2 VERY CAREFULLY from this thread.
Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes
then when done turn OFF the MS device driver update option, and set updates to let me choose,
DO NOT INSTALL ANY INTEL drivers offered, hide them.
As you have a custom build only go to/use the ones offered by them.

Merry XMAS
any probs come on back.

Hello Roy, I'm afraid I'm back again :(

I followed your instructions for both the clean install of windows 7 and the post about avoiding the need of installing the 200+ updates.

The install went fine and I updated only the updates as stated in post 2 of Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes.

At this point the display was still obviously displaying in 800 x 600 as there was no specific graphics driver installed, so I then went and downloaded the latest graphics driver for my card and did the install.

But upon restart the resolution was still 800 x 600 (unchangeable), there is no option upon right clicking the desktop to access "Nvidia control panel" as usual, and the pixels seem to be displaying oddly as can be seen in the screen shot below, they are not fixed though as if I move my cursor around the pixels disappear in the cursor's location but come back when moving the cursor elsewhere... very odd.
ss08.jpg

This strange issue with the pixels and resolution is what I was having before with the original issue before the fresh install so I'm completely at a loss as to what to do.

Also the graphics card in the device manager still had the "!" on it after installing the latest driver.

There are also several other devices under "Other devices" that have the "!" and seem to be missing drivers. Could this be related to display issues? I'm not sure as to how to go about updating those others drivers either.

There are also 142 "Important Updates" and 69 optional updates available in windows update. I did disable MS device driver update option and set updates to let me choose as you said but was wondering if it's safe to do these updates or if it's a bad idea?

All in all I'm left completely baffled seeing as it's a fresh install but looks like I may be having the same problem display wise.

I'm sure you and the other tech guys here on seven forums have better things to do at this time of year so I apologize for posting again but I'm at a complete loss. Obviously I understand I may have to wait some time for any help due to the holiday season.

Anyhow Merry Christmas to you and all the other staff here at Seven Forums!

Kaide.

Hi Kaide,
As the problem is still there im definately heading towards a BIOS setting thats causing this.
I was hunting around last night and found an old post in regard to the order that graphics card drivers are installed.
(i shoulda bookmarked it) typed in something like MS intel updates breaks ????? gave me a page with a green backgrounwill be bit like nvidias colours, could have been an overclockers site)
It went on about removing Nvidia totally then updating the intel bits then nvidia.

And whatever caused this is also the reason for the !/unknown device driver issue.
Its a find the initial cause, remedy this and these should be corrected

Obviously this is more important than the updates, updating is not the real problem, short version
update setting...> manual
then
Download and install IE 11 - IE 11
Reboot

With IE 11, download KB3020369, KB3125574 and KB3172605
Install:
KB3020369 is first
KB3125574 is second
KB3172605 is last. (this one is important)

Hi Roy and thanks for the speedy reply!

After searching high and low, unfortunately I'm not able to find the post you referred to above, don't suppose it may still be in your history would it? Also tried various search variations but to no avail.

The "Its a find the initial cause, remedy this and these should be corrected" make total sense but I just have no idea how to proceed with my limited knowledge. Stupid question probably but I have no idera so will just ask :o Is it possible to replace the Bios if that's the issue?

Hi Kaide,
found it link, ignore the W10 ref, the operation is the same in W7

https://forums.geforce.com/default/...x-980m-error-code-43-with-windows-10-solved-/

There are follow on links in there as well but, here are some of the more relevant from them.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/...allation-failed-nvidia-control-panel-missing/

Boot into the Bios:
1. disable the integrated graphics chip
2. Set the primary VGA adapter to PCIE instead of iGPU or Auto
3. boot into safe mode and run DDU and remove the video drivers for both intel and nvidia
4. open windows computer properties> advanced system properties>hardware tab> device installation settings: do not allow windows to install hardware drivers.
5. reboot into to normal mode and install your nvidia drivers.

Alternative to this is to disable the integrated graphics in Device Manager and disallow windows device driver installs. Setting the bios up right is the best solution.

Uninstalling Virtu MVP fixes code 43, this is just a way to get past any failed attempts to install the newer drivers.

Ive no idea what the Optimus function is or if you have it but there are also references to dissable it.

Enjoy the read.

Hello Roy,

I've been reading the threads you linked as per your suggestion, thanks for locating them!

I'm in the Bios but can't see how to "disable the integrated graphics chip" as stated in step 1.

Step 2, I found where to change the VGA adapter to PCIE so that's not a problem, so it's just step 1 that's an issue if you could please advise.

Thanks again,
Kaide.

Hello Roy,

Not sure if you will be around much today as it's Christmas (Merry Christmas btw!) but will write here anyway.

Am I to install the Intel HD Graphics Driver after the following procedure you mentioned previously?

"Boot into the Bios:
1. disable the integrated graphics chip
5. reboot into to normal mode and install your nvidia drivers."

Also I'm still stuck at stage 1 with that, all I can see is the following options in the Bios as in the screen shot bellow.
ss09.jpg

It doesn't help that half the options are off screen as for some reason the Bios no longer fits to screen (it used to).

Anyhow sorry if I misunderstood your instructions but I didn't want to go ahead without being sure in case I mess something up.

Thanks,
Kaide

Anybody else who may have some input and isn't really busy with Christmas?
Still struggling with step one in my last post above, not sure what setting it is to disable integrated graphics chip via the Bios.

Any advice would be appreciated thanks, and happy holiday all!
