Sudden Slow Boot

Hi All,

I apologise if this is the wrong folder to post in, if so please let me know and ill try to move it.

Basically, my computer is relatively powerful, i built it for gaming and its worked perfectly ever since.

However since the start of August i have come across a problem which i have been unable to solve (probably one of the first times this has happened :()

My computer runs windows 7, it gets to the logon screen and i logon perfectly fine. Problem is that after 5 minutes of waiting it goes to the desktop and for a further 20 minutes it is unusable. To the point where if i try to click on stuff Windows displays "Windows 7 has stopped working" etc.

I notice that for this 20 minutes on the desktop my startup applications (Like Fences, Pidgin, MS Security Essentials, Dropbox) do not start.

I think the problem may be due to soluto which i tried out at the end of last month, but i have no idea how to resolve this, i did not make any changes to startup applications in soluto.

If anybody has any suggestions i would appreciate the help :) Thanks. So far i have ensured that explorer.exe is running (which it is) And i have tried other stuff like running virus scans with MalwareBytes, MS Essentials and SuperAntiSpyware (Found nothing as i would expect)

My computer is specced as below
Quad Core 3Ghz CPU
8GB Ram
Nvidia 9800GTX

Temperatures of my components are fine, Graphics card around 60-75 degrees, CPU Cores at around 40-55

Help Please :D

Oh also, i thought at first that perhaps a service may be holding the computer up so i have also investigated the event viewer which showed nothing of worrry.

After the 20-30 minutes of waiting my computer is perfectly good until rebooted, i can play games like Crysis/Starcraft fine so i dont think i have a hardware fault

PS I cannot repair install windows as my disk is pre SP 1 :( Stupid Retail Disks

If it was my computer I would remove soluto, restart and see if that takes care of the problem.

Hi,

I tink thats when the problem started, when i got rid of it.

It is not currently running on my system.

Tbh i think i have crippled it, i set msconfig to boot into safe mode, and now i get to the login screen of safe mode and cannot login (after entering password it just says welcome and the loading icon spins for an hour before the screen shuts off)

Hi,

I agree with Layback Bear - uninstall Soluto and see where you are at.

If the problems still persist, you might want to consider whether:

- your HDD requires defragmentation
- your HDD might be failing

We can recommend some tools to help you diagnose whether the HDD might be an issue, but we really need to have some information about it. Consider using this tool to give use background information about your system in general:

Hi golden, thanks for your reply.

I will try to get the system specs but i am now stuck in limbo, turning on my computers goes to safe mode logon screen where it never gets past that.

The disk isnt fragmented as i checked this earlier today, i was about 4 percent fragmented which was pretty much just my 8gb pagefile.

I dont think the disk is going as i can access it perfectly via a boot into a linux live cd

I think something may have happened to either my graphics drivers ( as nvidia updated recently) or soluto breaking something, or finally something may have happened to the windows logon as the problems all relate around that)

Hi,

OK. Follow Layback Bears suggestion, and we take it from there.

EDIT Sorry I see you have already uninstalled Solutu? Correct?

In the past if there was an issue i would be able to do a repair install, but since sp1 we cannot use original retail disks anymore. Is there anywhere legal we can download the new sp1 iso from?

Hi,

Actually you can do a Windows Repair Install with SP1 - see this:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Especially Step 4.

Regards,
Golden

Yeah that was the thread i tried previously, it seems you need an sp1 retail disk, mine is from release so doesnt contain sp1 when i try to repair install it just says my os is a newer version

Ran startup repair off my retail disk, all tests passed but cannot login still, and still stuck booting into safe mode

Edit ahh on second look step 5 may be the answer, do you know of any cmd command i can use to boot into normal mode instead of safe mode so i can try that?

Yeah i ran it almost endlessly via the cmd prompt on the retail disk, it did fix some stuff the first time corrupted files etc, but nothing else the following times.

I cannot run it anymore as it says it is waiting for Reboot for a repair to take place, but i cannot make it reboot as i cannot boot.

Just seem to be stuck, i used msconfig to get into safe mode on boot, and now i am stuck in limbo as safe mode does not get past the login screen so i cannot set it back to non safe mode :(

Some times when you remove a program the changes the program has done do not get put back the way Windows 7 want them to be. When you get on your computer use the sfc /scannow as Golden has posted. I have found on my computers sfc /scannow does great things and doesn't take long, plus it can't hurt.

Ahahahahaha

Managed to get into safe mode on the 100th ish time lol switched it back to normal bootmand will try repair install followed by another sfc scannow

Thanks for your help :) hopefully that should solve it.

My guess is that soluto changed something in a windows setting and didnt unchange it once i got rid of soluto, hopefully doing the repair install will put things right :D

Also, just a quick Q, what are you guys thoughts on ssd? In the medium tolong term when affordable i want to install windows onto a ssd, is this worth doing?

Since i havent reinstalled the os from scratch since vista was released i will need to at some point, so may as well try to keep it upto date?

Hi,

Good stuff - get those sfc's run a few times.

SSD? Lets put it this way, it is by far, without a shadow of a doubt, the single best way to dramatically speed up your system, I could, and would, never go back to classic spinner disks for OS and applications.

Golden
