Solved Suddenly, wrong characters

Wrong characters have just sprouted in some places. Things like é instead of é, for instance.

I've spotted them in two places only : comments included in Properties of Macrium Reflect backup files, and one blog I follow regularly through Firefox.

That's the reason I suspect it's Windows-related and not a Macrium problem. It happened suddenly with no obvious trigger beforehand. It's the sort of bad transcription which often happens in emails.

Now the same blog displays correctly again. Any ideas ?

Maybe try toggling "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" settings in FF Options. Exit the settings window and refresh the page to see if it makes any difference.

Callender,

I tried the FF option on and off, and it did not make any difference (it was ticked, originally).

I'm aware though that my request is a bit elusive, since the Firefox problem disappeared by itself, so I can't cure it... unless it reappears. So I'm left with the Macrium problem. I do daily backups, so I'll see whether the next one will have the same defect.

Another possibility:

Check Control Panel> Region and Language> Administrative> Change System Locale

Check the current setting and that is correct for your region.

Thanks for checking. I'm out of ideas. You could try clearing font cache using Ccleaner if you have it installed. Optionally you can stop the Windows Font Cache service beforehand and start it again once Ccleaner finishes it's run.

What do you use to add comments to files? Possibly the problem lies there?

This glitch happens here as well but quite rarely.
The only fix I've found is to reload Firefox.

Well, Callender, your tweak-box is certainly deep and resourceful. I did that, I things got back to normal.

  • Stopped Windows Font Cache service in services.msc.
  • Ran C-Cleaner System / Font Cache option.
  • Started Windows Font Cache service again.
The Macrium Reflect backup files that had already been written were cleared of the mumbo-jumbo in their Properties dialog box (and Backup Comment column showing under Windows Explorer).

And the new Macrium backup I just made (with the same comment attached) came clean. By the way, here is the custom tab generated by Macrium it its backup files' Properties (very convenient tab, incidentally ; it's a pity more developers don't take advantage of this possibility offered by Windows):

That's where the characters were mangled. I didn't even know I had such a thing as a Font Cache. C-Cleaner has many options, and many are obscure. Thanks a lot !

Can't edit that faulty attachement. Here it is again. Somewhat blurry, but other versions are huge.
