No matter how often I say "No" to "Suggested sites" in IE 8 (Windows 7) it keeps coming back and hogging my taskbar. Is there a way I can shoot this thing so it stays dead?

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

Tools | Internet Options | Advance | Reset

Hope this helps,
Captain

Suggested sites

Hi, Cap'n.

Afraid your idea did not work. I don't want to uninstall/reinstall as this almost always adds problems further down the road.

Do you know of anywhere else I can get advice, if you can't think of any other solution?

Regards,

Ed :(

To turn off Suggested Sites:
  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button.
  2. Click Suggested Sites to clear the check mark and turn Suggested Sites off.
  3. Note: Turning off Suggested Sites does not clear your history and does not turn off automatic updates for feeds and Web Slices.
Internet Explorer 8: Privacy Policy

** click the 'tools' on upper right side of screen

Hi, Jacee.

Done all that but it just keeps on coming back. I have just relaunched IE8 and the welcome dialogue box gives the option for suggested site. I've enabled 'No' so hopefully tht willdo it. I'll let you know.

Best wishes,

Ed

A last note, everyone....

I eventually deleted the registry key, rebooted and when it was replaced (it was shorter) I disabled Suggested Sites again. That was over 24 hours ago and it has not come back. Maybe I've cracked it after all.

Thanks for all the input.

One other thing to check is that MANY ISPs also provide suggested sites through their DNS. You can by-pass this by using other DNS servers (like OpenDNS) or by logging into your ISPs account and telling it NOT to use suggested sites. I have seen this many many times especially with Comcast Cable.

Thanks for the info. I did check with Bt (British Telecom), my ISP, and they make no alterations to a user's browser unless requested, such as their Toolbar and Favourites bar - neither of which I use.

Try going to the "Advanced" tab in Internet Options
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced (rightmost tab)

... and then do the following
In the "Browsing Section" (2nd section) you will see that the default has a check mark in the box besides
"Enable Suggested Sites" (10th choice listed from top in Browsing Section)
just unclick that check mark along with the other suggestions and it should work for you

you could just stop use Big Blue E "IE" all togather and start use Firefox runs a lot smoother and less problems.
