Superfetch and Install

In Vista 64 I disabled superfetch. My i7 was eating anything that I could throw at it without this service which beat my drive up several hours per day.

Anyway, I am now having problems installing Win 7. Could there be a connection?

Perhaps I need it back on?

The trouble is that it moves impossibly slow in the last stage of installation... (several hours or more). I have another thread on the issue, so the main reason for this one was to ask about the effect of having the service off before an install attempt.

Prefetch doesn't do anything that would "beat your drive up for several hours per day." All prefetch does is log frequently used applications and "learns" portions of those applications to load into memory when Windows boots, and instructs the disk defragmenter to keep those portions together on the hard drive for speedy loading.

Let me guess....your're doing an in-place Upgrade, right?

Suggest you consider clean install from boot, especially when you have settings that bollixed the Vista you're upgrading.

Super-prefetch is part of the genius of 7 and never an impediment.

Nothing needs taming in 7 except startup programs. It was never bloatware to start with.

OK - I'll leave superfetch on for windows seven and hope for the best - thanks for the advice.

BUT, if you guys google for "superfetch and hard drive" I am not alone in my observations of Vista.

Do you know how long it takes to load Excel on an i7 with 6GB of RAM? About one second. And when I played games, superfetch would want to load all that stuff up, even when I wasn't going to play it again for days.

So superfetch would ABSOLUTELY thrash the hard drive when I was "idle" to load up stuff into RAM. I work on a laptop next to my desktop and the hard drive thrashing would drive me to distraction.

I turned off both superfetch and windows search and got blissful silence and you know what, Excel till took one second to load.

I have read a couple of strings where guys were banned for counseling others to turn off superfetch, so I won't do that. But in my case, superfetch was useless and annoying.

That's why I bailed from Vista into Win7 beta's after a month.

And I also tried turning everything off. In fact, I lived by Black Viper's service edits in Vista. Don't need him any more.
