Please help. I was installing a Buffalo External Ministation harddrive on to my Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop and now the laptop doesn't work properly. It is super-slow. I ran a diagnostic check and it appears to be the superfetch which is not working. I tried updating windows to no avail. I contacted buffalo who said to contact Dell - I'm at my wits end. My laptop is using 94%RAM ATM. I have tried changing the settings for the superfetch in msconfig but that doesn't work. I did a system restore and that didn't work. I don't know what to do. The laptop works OK in safe mode.

Is the superfetch service started?

Open the Services window by typing services.msc in Start Search. Then locate the SuperFetch key.

Start the service if stopped.

Double-click on the window, change the start up type is Automatic.

Hi prabz, yes it is working I just checked. It doesn't work in safe-mode so I had to go back to 'normal' mode and it took ages to check alas.

It is not Superfetch...your problem lies with whatever is causing your system to use 94% of your RAM. Obviously it has something to do or was caused by installing whatever this Buffalo thing is.

What has superfetch got to do with this? I suspect you installed some software/ driver associated with Buffalo thats causing the issue.

OK, I agree to be honest. However, when I phoned Buffalo and said I had done a restore and still had the problem they insisted that the problem would have gone as a restore would remove all things Buffalo - I didn't agree at all but am at a loss on how to fix the problem. Any ideas ?

Hello gaz, very interesting reply. Yes I did use the software much to my chagrin. I wish I had never bought the thing now. I did also reformat it because as you know it wont accept files larger than 4GB otherwise. The whole thing is a mess and for Buffalo to refute point-blank that the fault did not lie in their product is reprehensible. I will do what Bill2 says tomorrow as it's a bit late in the day for me to go changing things now. Thanks for your comments though - greatly appreciated.

Another thing which Buffalo said was that it didn't come with software.....oh no.....then what was that I set it up with then !

I think you talking about the secure lockware(not sure)it never worked back then and after looking on there site i dont think its been updated for Win7
They are lying to you, sounds like they just cant be bothered accepting responsability, mine works fine but on a bad note i cant locate the backup partition on it,even when i try diskpart,i just left it alone after formating

Still struggling through the clean bootup 'routine' - it is taking forever. I hope I can find the problem by the end of it. I'm so annoyed at myself. I'm sorry that the title of this thread is misleading too.

I think I have discovered the source of my problems. I did the clean boot as Bill2 said and found that none of the 'services' seemed to be causing the issue. When I tried those items in the startup tab however there were two entries for Buffalo.

I unchecked these but didn't get a 'restart' message. I cannot get these items to stay unchecked so the laptop keeps looking for them but I deleted the Buffalo software (and registry entries) when I had the problem and I think my laptop still thinks they are there. I don't know what to do now - I'm stuck. I can see the problem but can't fix it - help.

Download and run CCleaner. Go to the Startup tab in CCleaner, delete Buffalo entries there if you find them.

Also run a regular as well as registry cleanup with CCleaner.

Luckily I had ccleaner so I did as you said but couldn't delete the two entries for Buffalo. I then disabled them which I could do. I checked msconfig and noticed they were also disabled there. I then did a clean and a registry clean but it made no difference.

I am doing another system restore to see if that makes a difference.

Well after all that I am still in the same situation. The other thing which I forgot to mention is that the colour of the taskbar has changed from being clear (transparent) like the 'top icon dock' (I don't know what it is called) to being opaque and very light blue - this happened when I was doing the install of the Buffalo HardDrive.
