Supposed HDD errors appearing in Event Viewer.

Hi guys,

I just noticed while popping in the Event Viewer that I keep getting these errors about my Hard Drive. It always goes along the line of 'The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.' I keep getting these errors almost daily in the Event Viewer. I have posted the Event Viewer log if you would like to see the full log (It seems I can't upload .evtx files, so I compressed it into a .zip file). View attachment HDD Error.zip

I get those every time I plug-in a USB flash drive or hard disk. I think it has something to do with VirtualCD; I just ignore them. Do you have a VCD e.g. Daemon Tools running? Times coincide with USB stuff?

If you want you can tell Windows to pop a message every time you get an error.

How old is the computer?

If you want, go into the BIOS and usually you have a HDD check utility in there. See if it shows anything.

Other than that, see if there are any updated drivers for your HDD.

@maxseven - Yes I use WinCDEmu, but that is not the cause of the problem. How would I find out if the problem is from plugging in USB HDD's?

@motc7 - It's a December 2009 HP laptop (check the system specs). The BIOS is a restricted one... And there are no drivers for the HDD.

Simply look at the clock, plug in a drive, and open-up Event Viewer and look for the error. Or have it open already and hit Refresh. Try this with any of the gizmos you plug-in to your USB port.

BTW "Harddisk1" should correspond to whatever Disk Management shows you.

Ok fine then, I've narrowed down the problem to one of the External Hard Drives I have plugged in. What can I do next to fix this?

But, how do you know anything is broken? AFAICT it's related to your virtual drive and there's no way to avoid the error. If you don't believe me, uninstall the WinCDEmu software and see if the problem goes away.

If there is a "fix", I'd like to know about it too. But until then I just ignore it as it isn't hurting anything.

Dude, I already told you, its not my virtual drive. The Event Viewer kept pointing to Disk1, which is one of my external Hard Drives in the Disk Management (Disk 0 is my laptop HDD). My Virtual Drive does not run at all unless I tell it to do so. If something wasn't wrong, this would not be showing up as an Error under Event Viewer.

I would download the diagnostic program from the manufacturer of your external. It should be able to tell you if there are problems with the external.

SlasherIT, IDK what model that drive is so I randomly chose a model which led me to this page. As you can see theres an interesting mix of utilities. Please check if similar utilities exist for your model.

Have you plugged-in any other USB device e.g. a flash stick? To see if you get an error with *it*?

@Bill2 - This is the exact link for my product Welcome to the Transcend Website. Notice at the bottom a HDD Bad sector recovery SOP program which isn't anything like that. The software that link gives is this HDDGURU: HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool, which doesn't do anything what the link says it does... I ain't buying Transcend again, that's for sure.

@maxseven - Ok... I don't know, but that doesn't matter now really, as I have tracked the problem to the HDD already. Now I need to fix it...

R in DR always means ''removable''.

This error, according to my expert guessing, has something to do with enabling read/write caching on an external removable disk. I see it, I don't worry about it. Neither should you.
