Solved surround sound issue

Recently, windows did an update. Since then, I lost my surround sound, (realtek drivers). Every time I try to change the settings to enable it again, I lose all sound and have to uninstall then reinstall realtek. If I don't touch the settings, I get sound through the monitor, but once I try and change them, windows trouble shooter says my peripherals are not plugged in. I have not unplugged nor changed any hardware or wiring configurations. I have looked for a solution. but can't find any posts related to this. Not sure if there is some setting I am missing that I should change. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome gowonsouth to SF.
Right click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand of the screen. Then select playback devices and set your realtek as default device.

Ok, that opens the options to choose between ATI HDMI output (works), realtek digital output (sound bars move but no sound), and realtek HDMI output (sound bars move but no sound). At least I didn't have to uninstall and reinstall, but still not getting any sound through my surround sound speakers. Could this be a problem with the output jacks on my monitor possibly? (as in they are not working at all now for some reason?). and thanks for the reply by the way

At the Realtek device wanted open up properties and see if you can configure for 5.1 and other tweeks. Also understand that very few programs have strong rear channel info so they don't sing like the front mains will.

The realtek HDMI has the option for 5.1, but no sound at all, even during the test. Not sure why. It was working fine before the update.

You can always restore back to the date and time when all was well if your rig was set up to save restore points, maybe the best and quickest fix.

Looked at the option for restore points, but all were lost with the last update. However, thanks for your help, but went through the hassle of hooking up and using an alternate monitor, seems the issue is with the output jacks on the new monitor. It is going back to the store. Thanks for your help.
