XP was and still is, considered M$'s best OS. While most of us like seven more, this is from a Large Corporation's standpoint. XP is solid, dependable, and almost everyone uses or knows how to use it. Switching to Seven would cost A LOT OF MONEY!

The problem with Microsoft at the moment is that there is still no major change in the OS that can convince IT Departments to make a switch. Even I won't mind sticking to XP as it is faster for my gaming and overall performance. When I think What I need in 7 that isn't in XP, well nothing pops up. Until developers stop supporting older OS such as XP, the XP era will continue to live.

They will have their reasons when XP is totally no longer supported (no new security updates), and folks with malicious intent continue to exploit new holes in XP knowing so many companies still run it.

I work for a large, presumingly high-tech corporation. IT here is about three to ten years behind current computer technology. XP Pro SP2 (not SP3) is the standard desktop OS, yet we use Office 2007 (in Compatibility Mode though no one is supposed to have the older Office). IE6 is still the standard browser. Part of this odd mix has to do with compatibility with certain applications that some people use here that are somewhat ancient and cranky. The hardware IT buys is fairly up to date Dell boxes with downgraded OS. My Dell Workstation has a Vista Business sticker on it, but came with XP Pro SP2. If and when IT is forced to upgrade for some reason, they will. Otherwise this company is not going to Windows 7.

I also work for a large company, doing IT support as a contractor.

This company also is using Win XP SP2 but is stuck on Office 2000 with Outlook 2003 and IE6. I know they've tested Vista and IE7 but I have a feeling that it was close enough to Win 7 to decide to wait until Win 7 came out to change OS.

Yeah... I can't wait for Microsoft to drop support for XP... At my old job (where I supported ~2500 machines) I hated dealing with the old crappy programs that wouldn't run in an up to date browser, or in a newer OS. They were terribly written, old and unreliable. I just can't wait for support to be dropped and XP to be targeted so heavily that companies decide the money they are losing from fixing the issues is more than the money lost to upgrade...

The single biggest reason for people to move off of XP is that Microsoft will NEVER go back to that kernel. They've made massive improvements to the core of the OS since XP back in 2001, and they're never going to throw that all out and release "Windows XP 2" instead of Windows 8, or any other future Windows OS. The developers that refuse to support Vista and Windows 7 are refusing to support ANY OS beyond XP, and that's just stupid. Could you imagine if Linux developers stopped supporting new versions of Ubuntu past 9.04, or if Mac developers refused to support anything beyond Leopard? Same basic principle.

Right now there is still significant compatibility overlap between XP, Vista, and 7. But MS will eventually no longer be able to improve new versions of Windows while still maintaining compatibility with XP. People can't expect MS to be able to make bigger and better things, if in 2021 people are still complaining that the latest Windows isn't compatible with XP programs.

The longer companies stay with XP the more money they will spend in the long run. Its a malware, exploit magnet. Driver support will fade away in time. They will miss out on new features that will save precious time and money. DirectAccess anyone? This alone would save huge management headaces along with saving money for purchasing VPN software/hardware. But going back to the beginning, security should be number 1 on the list. I could go on. All I know is that next summer I am rolling out Windows 7 to every client we have if at all possible.

I agree they should wait a year (like I will, to get fixes, updates...maybe a service pack) but XP's days are over...

And they are looking at it from a very selfish standpoint. Older compatibility needs to be dropped eventually for improved performance to be attained.

Yeah, but that would result in effort, time, and money to upgrade. That lowers profits, which is unacceptable.

Mostly, but it depends. As was stated XP is a magnet for exploits and malicious material so a move to Windows 7 "could" immediately increase productivity and in turn profits as well.
