Hello, I am new to this forum. I have a question that I can't seem to answer. SVCHOST.exe is hogging up alot of CPU in my processes tab. I am an avid Starcraft 2 player and can't enjoy the game because SVCHOST.exe spikes up and down causing in-game lag. I am not very computer savvy, so don't drop any huge words on me, ha. :)

Regards,

The svchost.exe is a generic process that runs .dlls. Have a look here for more detail: What is svchost.exe And Why Is It Running? - How-To Geek

So there can be mayny different processes (.dlls) running under it. In order to find the culprit, you have to do some work.

1. Download and install Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

2. Run Process Explorer. Click on CPU on the top until those processes that use all the time appear on top (see first picture below).

3. Right click on the svchost.exe that uses all the time and go to Properties.

4. In Properties, click on the "Services" tab (see second picture below). The services that this svchost.exe runs will be listed (like in the red box of my picture - Note: I picked an arbitrary svchost.exe).

5. Take a snip of that and post it here ( http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html ) - or make a list which services those are.

I would try this (as a test):

1. Disable the Diagnostic Policy Service in Services (right click on the service > Properties > Disable)
2. Disable the firewall

If that does not help, we will deal with the BFE

It was at 11k for one svchost.exe, now it is at 8k. So that helped. Should I try with BFE?

I found another svchost.exe with like 50k. And there is about 10 services dependent on it. :(

What do you mean by "50K" - I thought we are looking for CPU time usage not RAM usage.

Well both. Svchost.exe is stealing memory as well.

I would just like some RAM back so I can play SC2 with no problems. I think SVCHOST.exe is taking up memory so I have to get rid of them somehow, thus giving me some memory back. I guess I ment hogging CPU as in CPU and RAM. I apologize. :/

But RAM is not your problem. With 3GB of RAM, it will take a lot to get you into a squeeze. You cannot just shut down services because they use RAM. Those services are there for a purpose.

If you have a service that uses an abnormal amount of CPU time, it should be investigated. But services that take 50K of RAM are quite common and normal.
