Hi,

I am having problems with svchost.exe using up loads of cpu - approx 50% on a dual core 3.4ghz.

I have been trying to sort this for the last week using google etc but no luck so trying here now!

I am running win7 x64.

The services running under the 2 offending svchost.exe processes are:

Audiosrv
Dhcp
eventlog
lmhosts
wscsvc

BFE
DPS
MpsSvc

Could anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance

You may want to download and run Malwarebytes (free download) to see if you have any Malware issues. Malwarebytes

It won't fix the issue for you but will identify actual Malware on your PC that may be causing the issue, action to remove the Malware needs to be undertaken by you, it just points to where the offender(s) are.

Well that is good news, next question is are your drivers and updates for Windows up to date?

i just installed some updates, and after they installed it worked fine, i then restarted again to see if it was a coincidence...and sure enough it happened again.

as far as i know my drivers are up to date, although i think this could be a problem with a creative sound card i tried to install.

i have now uninstalled it and got rid of all the software, but it is still happening to maybe not.

Monitor it for a little bit, if it returns I used the following on a friends PC due to the same issue to identify what process using svchost was actually eating up the resource. svchost viewer It takes a few seconds to download and install and several minutes to run, it identifies everything using svchost and how much resource it is using and should help you pinpoint the offender.

Almost forgot to add that you should not allow the automatic updates from Creative run with Windows 7 this has been an ongoing issue and you should check for updates via their website.

there also seems to be quite a high "hardware interrupts@ cpu usage.

i had a look at the svchoste viewer thing, it only shows amount of memory being used, not cpu, so not quite sure how to identify which process is eating up the cpu?

I'm not actually using creatives drivers I am using PAX drivers cause creatives are crap and they never update.

Everytime I think I am getting somewhere this bloody computer gets even worse I swear!

I am going to try and do some more assessment without the xfi card in the system, and with deleted drivers.

It works fine in safe mode so I think it must be a driver issue of some sort...

I agree, when hardware takes heavy resources with no apparent reason generally a driver is the culprit. If you are running well in Safe mode you may want to see how your svchost consumption differs fron normal mode.

Svchost in safe mode varies between 1 and 10% cpu usage...probably averaging at the lower end, so very minimal.

It is the same 2 svchost processes each time running the same services...I suppose it could be a networking driver...maybe I will try safe mode with networking and see if the issue is apparent there

I'd see if your network card is seated well, drivers up to date and if your cable is seated and in good condition, be interested in seeing what allowing networking in Safe Mode gives you.

the networking is onboard, so i guess that helps with seating. where is best to get updated drivers from? mobo manf or networking manf? or just windows update?

i will try unplugging and replugging everything to check seating of graphics etc..

most of the kit is brand new, or barely used so it is very frustrating.

thanks for all your advice, nice to have someone to bounce ideas off.

1. Run the Latency Checker and see whether you have any red bars. If yes, you have a driver problem

2. If that occurs during playback of any music, check whether any enhancements are enabled. They can take a lot of CPU time
