Solved Swapping versions W7

This will be a little convoluted so bear with me. I have two systems, an older 980X system with W7 Pro 64 and a newer 3770 with W7 Home 64. What I ultimately want to do is upgrade the 3770 to W10 PRO.

My thinking is that if I could switch the OS between the 980 system to the 3770 I could then upgrade the 3770 to 10 PRO.

I have the original install media for both 7 Pro & 7 Home. I am not at home but IIRC they are retail versions BUT could be OEM.

Without losing data and considering dealing with registration keys, etc what would be the best approach to effecting this swap?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I believe it would be safer to upgrade the machine you want to and then upgrade it to 10 Pro for I believe 99.us

OEM's can not be transferred as you probably already know
There are retail oem's as well and it's difficult to tell unless you contact where you purchased the disks from and simply ask them
Retail versions usually cost in the neighborhood of 3-400.us

That's what I figured. Most systems I build, I use OEM media, just can't recall if that's the case with this one. think I'll take the path of least resistance and follow your suggestion.

If you post the logs using the tutorial requested by ThrashZone we will be able to tell you if you have a OEM or Retail installed.

Hi,
It makes sense most oem's you could buy 3 of them for the price of 1 real retail version

I personally believe the price for win-10 will drop Newegg has a couple of times knocked 10% off 140.us for a single download of 10 pro 64 or 32 bit
Personally I don't know if it will ever happen but I want a disk not a download and that's not for nearly a year or even after I'm in no hurry
