Hi,

So last year I had to get a new hard drive for my laptop. Now I've realized that there are some files on the old hard drive that I need. Is it as "simple" as opening up my laptop, taking out the new HD, putting the old one in, and turning it on? And when I'm done transferring the files I need to a flash drive (assuming the old HD works long enough for me to do this), turn it off, take the old HD out, and put the new one back in? Will I have to re-install Windows on the new HD again? Will I lose any files on the new HD?

I know this is a really simple, basic question but this is my first and only laptop and I can't afford a replacement so I'm being very cautious about this.

Hi Book,
thats the way to go:).

Nothing will be lost on the newer drive, so no re-install required.

It's simpler to put it into an external drive and get it that way because less risk of opening up the PC

However you do this, once you connect the old drive to the computer, you should do a full image backup of the drive. Use software which will allow you to mount the image as a drive, such as Macrium Reflect Free. By doing this, you will be able to mount the image as a drive in the future and copy anything you want out of it.
