If I remember right, it's the symbol for Enter (line break)
And somewhere under settings it's possible to set if it should show or not.
I used it during my education in office 2007, but it was a few years ago,
So I'm not sure if i remember it 100% right.

My wife has that showing in Word on her computer. That used to frustrate me to no end, till she told me why it was there!
