Sync Toy vs SkyDrive

I have a question regarding sync files between my desktop and notebook, and using other devices.
I have been using SyncToy for quite a while, with fairly good results. Sometimes though I seem to get edits (deletions and overwrites) that I really do not want. Is there a better solution for syncing large amounts of files?
I am starting to try out using SkyDrive, but I’m not totally comfortable with putting sensitive documents online, also I often use my notebook without any internet access and I would like to be able to have a local copy available.
Optimally I would like to be able to have a master drive that both desktop and notebook sync their local versions to. I believe this is possible, but I am not sure how to set it up through windows.
What kind of options are there for doing this?

I have another question regarding offline files. How can I tell how much space the offline files are taking on the C drive? I set up my laptop/netbook with an SSD and I only want to sync the most critical files. I want to see how much space is taken on the drive so I can manage which offline files to include.
Also, if I am away from my home network, and I connect to say a WiFi hotspot, will the offline files sync with the network folders? And if I set up these folders as a library, will they be available when I connect remotely. I used my homegroup as the path to the network folders.
