If you used to like the Virtual desktop program (note NOT Virtual Machines) (up to 4 Virtual desktops) for XP / W2K3 server the utility has now been updated to work for Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Here's it on W8 -- will work the same on W7 --not on a W7 machine currently but it DOES work.
download from Ms as the SYSINTERNALS suite and choose desktops. I find it very useful having totally switchable desktops with their own set of applications / backgrounds and windows.
