System backup

Hi everyone
I am new to win7 Home Prem. My question is two part. I have created a sys backup on a partition, will I be able to restore from the one HDD installed or should I burn the backup to dvd's

Hi there, its always best to backup to external media such as a DVD or an external hard disk drive.

DVD's are 4.7GB unless you are using dual layer disks, so its probably best to backup to an external device.

Going back to your original point, its best if you don't back up to the local drive, if that drive fails then your backup becomes inaccessible and unusable.

And to add, yes you will be able to restore, but again, not if the drive fails.

Thanks for the info one other question should I just drad and deop the file to the burner and go ahead change dvd's when they are full ansd do they have to be formatted

If you want a recoverable backup of your system, you have to make images. Drag and drop does not work. And use an external disk because images can be very large (mine are usually around 40GBs).

You need an imaging program - the best I have found in years of experimenting is free Macrium Here is my tutorial that explains it.

In addition you need the recovery program. You can download the .iso from my Skydrive. Burn this .iso to CD. When you want to recover, you have to boot the PC with that CD.
