Is there a way to install Lightscribe software on a disk other than the OS disk?
When ever I start the install it doesn't give me a choice. I would rather have it installed on another disk, not my operating disk.

Are you talking about the Lightscribe System Software? Why do you need it on another drive? It is basically a bunch of driver files...it doesn't take up much space.

Space

Space is at a premium of SSD's. If you start loading templates labels it can take up significant room.

You aren't talking about the same thing as me, then. I install the System Software, which is basically the driver files that allow apps to see the drive as a Lightscribe drive. That should go on the system volume. Your labelling software should let you install anywhere you want. I'm assuming this is what you are referring to, considering the fact you mentioned templates. I don't ever bother with the LightScribe-brand labelling software from Lightscribe.com, because it's featureless and junk (so if this is what you had been using, check out some other options).

I personally use a free version of SureThing that came with one of my burners. Even so, any software you use should let you open templates from anywhere else. You shouldn't have to keep the templates in the program's folder.

Light Scribe

It is the Light Scribe Templet Labler.
The install does not give me a choice of directory to install to. Which really sucks. The software you mentioned, I believe uses light scribe I think they must have a lock on the market. I looked at some others and they all seem to use light scribe. On Light Scribe's sight there was a list of links to labeling software, which is a clue that they are partners. Looks as if I want to direct label cd roms it will be with Light Scribe and it will be loaded on my operating system disk.

Even if you have to load the software on your system disk, you still should be able to store your files elsewhere. SureThing does let me specify where to install the software, if I was to put it elsewhere. Since whatever app you are using seems to be hard-coded, have you considered doing a clean install and redirecting your program files directory? I had a 64 GB SSD and ended up selling it because it was great for testing, but wasn't practical for everyday use. I'm waiting for price drops on 120 or larger.

You could create a symbolic directory link in the Lightscribe labeler folder to a location on another hard drive and move the templates there.


1) Create a folder on another drive. Example G:\Lightscribe Templates\

2) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Lightscribe Template Labeler\Templatelabeler\Content\
and copy the folder Templates into the folder you created on the other
drive. Templates is the folder where the Lightscribe templates are stored.
Then rename the original folder on the C: drive Templatesorg. This is just for backup. You can delete it later.

3) Open a command prompt as administrator. Right click the Command prompt icon and select "Run as administrator".

4) Type CD C:\Program Files (x86)\Lightscribe Template Labeler\Templatelabeler\Content\

5) Hit enter. you should be in the Content folder where the Templates folder is.

6) Type Mklink /D Templates g:\lightscribe Templates\Templates\
The part of the entry G:\Lightscribe templates\ should be the drive and folder you created.

7) Hit enter. It should say
symbolic link created for templates <<==>> g:\Lightscribe Templates\templates\

This creates a symbolic link to the folder you created on the other drive.
When the Lightscribe program goes to get templates or you install new ones, they will go to the new folder on the alternate disk with no writes or storing to the SSD.

If you want to go back to the way it was, just delete the link and copy back the templates folder.

Edit: I discovered that although this will move the initially installed templates folder it is really not necessary since Lightscribe stores all new templates in the Documents folder in folder Lightscribe.
