I am having a very weird problem with my dvd drive and windows.
It started randomly one day when I was using vista. Out of no where when a disc was inserted the computer would freeze and the only fix was to manuall restart it. So after confirming it's not the drive that's the issue(works in xp and ubuntu just fine).
Now I finally got a copy of windows 7 ultimate(64bit) yesterday and it's doing the same thing. I have to use my xbox 360 hd-dvd drive because for some reason it works just fine, but reads very slowly. The internal drive is an HP dvd1270i(sata). There is no driver for it on their site so i'm just lost on what the problem is, and how to fix it.
I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but that's not working.
Please help
Well I finally solved this one myself. Disconnected my second hdd(which is only used for backup) and viola, the internal drive is working just fine again.
Does this mean I need a new psu?
Never mind. It appeared to be working correctly again, but it's still doing the same thing.
Make them both 'CS' - cable select with the jumpers on the back
or Master/slave slave/master - whichever way round works without crashing your pc!
Sata HP DVD drive [sata] = Manufacturer: Lite-On IT Corp.
Try swapping the dvd sata lead to another connector on the motherboard and make sure you do not have to enable anything in the bios for system to see drive!

I've tried different sata ports for the dvd drive. There are no jumpers on the back of it. The fact that the drive works in xp and ubuntu has me so confused. I used it to install windows 7, so i'm thinking one of the updates may have killed it.
Hp does not have any driver or firmware for this drive though.
