System freezes when using robocopy

I'm transfering around 216GB of files from my old hard drive to my new one using a SATA->USB converter cable (I only have one HDD slot). Using robocopy to transfer the files, the system freezes completely - nothing responds at all and any status LEDs that are lit at the time remain lit. My only option is to turn off the power. The clock will show the time of the crash (i.e., it stops).

I've yet to 'witness' the crash, but when I leave the computer alone for a bit and come back later on, I find it locked up.

Strangely, since then, I'm now using a normal drag+drop to copy the files, and it hasn't crashed in all the time it's been copying so far.

There's nothing in the event logs... Any ideas?

Zig, he said robocopy.. not teracopy..

I've never had any problems with robocopy... This is what I do... I uploaded the exe file there..

2shared - download robocopy.exe

I use the following .bat file

@echo off

robocopy "C:\users\tom\desktop" "F:\desktop" /mir /s

echo Backup Complete

pause

That's what you use and it freezes?

Pretty much, but from a command prompt:
Code:
robocopy L:\ D:\ /E /V

It has just crashed using a normal Explorer drag+drop copy now though, so I'm thinking it's nothing to do with robocopy after all...

Just checked both hard drives with HD Tune - no errors at all. It's not a heat problem either, as I had HWM running and it showed the processor cores at 39° and 41°, and the hard drive was at 35°. Maybe the graphics card is naff? I've never had this problem before... it only seems to be when I'm copying enormous amounts of data, like now....

Apologies for the Teracopy! BY crash do you mean hang or BSOD? If bsod could you go into c:\windows\minidump, zip the dump file (*.dmp) and upload it for us to debug. If not bsod, could you go into event viewer (type event in search) and go to the windows log>application tab. Check for errors related and using snipping tool (snip) take a screen shot and upload it

Thanks

Ken

It's not a BSOD - it just freezes (like someone's pressed a pause button). There is nothing in the event logs afterwards, except a "the previous shutdown was unexpected" message.

I'm now transfering these files over the network and it hasn't locked up once yet - I'm thinking maybe it's an 'overload' of some sort? My network is a 100Mbps ethernet link, whereas the hard drive USB connector was 480Mbps... too much data to handle maybe?

I experienced this problem once but it was with a 16GB flash drive...

Copying large files would cause my system to freeze and my option would be to unplug the flash drive...

Copying small files would be fine...

In conclusion, the flash drive was faulty because @ one time I could not copy anything to it...

Maybe your hard drive it faulty?

I was starting to think that, though the BIOS diagnostics thing and HD Tune found no errors.
