Hi,

I recently installed a new SATA disk, Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB, unfortunately my motherbord has run out of SATA ports (6 total and 7 disks ;)). The thing is that I started to transfer large amounts of data from one of my other disks to this new one (after it has been formated ofc) and after a while my system hangs.

I can't for the life of me understand what makes the system halt. I have installed the latest drivers for the PCI-E SATA II card from St Lab, the controller has the SiL 3132 chip and I've also downloaded the recommended BIOS for that chip as well as the drivers for Windows 7 x64 but the system still hangs after a while. I have tried not "using" the drive at all for instance only boot up and start a game from another hdd and I can play for a few minutes than halt.

I've also recently scanned my memory with memtest and no errors so I'm starting to think that it's either the drive thats faulty or that the SATA controller card won't play fair/nice with my system :(

Any ideas?

Could it be overheating?

Also I have an old Windows XP Laptop for backup/occasional use etc.
I don't think that the drive is getting overheated, but I'll keep an eye on it. The drives are mounted so the air should flow better when cooling them down. Also there are a total of 7 hdds mounted and infront of them 2x120 mm fans transporting outside air in and 4 fans transporting out the warmer air inside the case. The 4 outgoing fans are a mix of two 120mm fans and two 140mm fans.

It's either as suggested above or you might want to run Seagate tools on your HD to make sure all is well with the HD.
You also mentioned you have 2 120's blowing air in and the rest blowing air out. I would suggest you choose 1 or 2 of the others and blow some more cool air in as with that many HD's not as much cool air is getting into your case as I think you need.
They're probably doing a pretty good job cooling the HD's but their are a lot of other components in your system that are not getting a whole lot of cool air circulation around them. JMO. Fabe

Funny thing is that I have now transferred all data from the smallest drive in my system to some of the other drives and replaced it with my 1TB drive. Also to note that the SATA controller card isn't in the system anymore and all is fine :( so I guess that the bad guy in this situation was the controller card (or its drivers).

The drives are nice and cool and I have about the same amount of fans blowing cool air in as I have them blowing the warm air out, just to be on the safe side.
