Can I create a system image and save it to the SAME computer?

I've got a 1TB hard drive on my computer and the system image is around 40GB.

My external hard drive that I will be using for the future is at my brothers house so I was wondering if it were possible to save it to the SAME computer (the system image) and then later transfer it to the external hard drive when my brother has time to drop it off.

I don't think he will be able to stay long enough to wait for me to back up it up twice.

Hell Mangoh,

Yes, you can save a system image on the same computer as long as it's saved to a partition or HDD that is not included in the system image, and has enough free space to hold it. It will not let you save it to one included in the image.

However, I wouldn't recommend to bother with transferring the system image backup, but instead just create a new one and save it directly to the external HDD. Afterwards, you could delete the one on your computer if you like. When you move a backup, it tends to get corrupted easy and possibly be of no use to be able to restore from.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Hey it certainly does help :)

Just one question my brother, myself and my other brother both have our own computer.

So if we all created a system image of our own computer and then stored it directly on the 1TB external hard drive do you think there would be complications when restoring from a system image.

I'm concerned that when plugging in the hard drive the computer would just find the first system image or can you direct it to a specific folder to over come this problem?

Yes, there could be issues with doing it like that. It's best to save the system image to where you want it at, and not move or touch it. The issues come when they are moved.

The system images will be separated by folders named with each computer name, so no worries there. When you connect the external HDD and start the system image recovery process, you will have the option to select the latest image created from your system, or select to use another image.
