I tried to upgrade my Windows 7 computer to the latest Windows 10 build. However, there was some issue after upgrading the operating system, which would prevent the computer from shutting down or entering the hibernate mode. I decided to revert back to Windows 7 again, since there were also other issues with software and device driver compatibility.

The computer successfully reverted back to Windows 7 without any errors reported. However, all of the backup and recovery applications such as the Dell Backup & Recovery / Windows Backup & Restore / Acronis True Image have now stopped working. These applications worked without any issues before the Windows 10 upgrade attempt. All of the bootable media previously created by these applications also now displays errors.

The option "Repair Your Computer" accessible with F8 key during boot also displays the below error:
Code:
Windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your langugae settings, and then click next
3. Click "repair your computer."

Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Please advise on how to restore the System Restore functionality. Thanks.

Thanks Layback Bear! Sorry. I was unable to reply back earlier.

I tried all the options from 1 through 12 posted on the page.

Option (1) To (3) - The function for System Restore was earlier turned-off since I usually use Dell Backup & Recovery Manager for restoring files. I was able to turn-on and create a System Restore point successfully.

Option (4) - It displays 1 Error and 2 Warnings for the last login.

This is details displayed for the Error message:

Those logs don't help me much; but Microsoft has a bunch of ideas online on how to repair this problem.
One thing you could try. It might help and will not hurt.

sfc /scannow. Here is a tutorial. It will check Windows 7 system files and repair if in can.

Please note:
Somewhere on this forum or the Ten Forum I have read something about this same problem when coming back to Windows 7 from W-10. I just don't remember where.

I will go back to the ranch and see if I can get some more eyes to look at your problem.
Hang in there it might take some time. I would wait before doing anything exotic.

Edit:
Their you go. More help while I was searching on line.

Thank you torchwood.

The download for Fixit Wizard does not seem to work anymore; however, the instructions and script at the bottom of the linked page does not fix the issue either.

Thanks! I ran the 'sfc /scannow' command, but it reports that no integrity violations were found.

I assume that installing Windows 10 most probably changed some system boot setting, since the bootable Dell Recovery disc and even Acronis Recovery device does not run anymore? Is there any means to revert back the boot setting such that Dell Backup Manager starts to work?

I do not plan to try any exotic solution right now, but the issue needs to be fixed. Though the computer is now working, it would be disastrous if it crashes again, since then there would be no way to fix it!

I have never used a Dell computer so Dell Backup Manager is foreign to me.

What method did you use to upgrade to W-10?
How did you go back to Windows 7?
What method did you use?

Have you activated Windows 7 again and what fashion did you do that?

I ask these kinds of questions because it might help others to help you with your problem.

---------------------

I truly believe answering these question would be helpful.

1. What method did you use to upgrade to W-10?

2. How did you go back to Windows 7?
What method did you use?

3. Have you activated Windows 7 again and what fashion did you do that?

Knowing exactly how you got where you are at now should be helpful.

The application Dell Backup & Recovery Manager creates WIM files to restore the system to a previous state. This was working properly until this Windows 10 upgrade installation.

I upgraded to Windows 10 using an DVD that had the Windows 10 ISO mounted, then reverted back using the 'Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7' option the same day itself. When it removed Windows 10 then everything including the Windows activation returned to the earlier state.

Thanks.

I have never used a Dell computer so Dell Backup Manager is foreign to me.

I too never kept the default factory installation and used always Dell Backup to restore to a customized version. I have the Version 1.3 installed that permits to recover a system image, however the new 1.6 version requires a payment to utilize this function. These applications did not have any issues until the Windows 10 installation was done.

There probably might be some boot settings that have been damaged, since it is not possible to even run the bootable devices either.

I use Dell, but never liked a factory installation. So I never paid any attention to Dell BackUp & Recovery.

For Dell BackUp & Recovery and Acronis True Image, I think it would be better to install those afresh.

See it that action can make those application workable.

Threre are sevral 3rd party drive imaging tools. I use Aomei Backupper Standard version is free ( new version v3.5 now available). However, you already have a 3rd party program - Acronis.

You want to use the Dell recovery also. I am not familiar with it. If I come across anything relating to your Dell recovery v1.3, will let you know.

Thanks. I will use the Macrium freeware version for backups as well; hopefully it would be possible to fix the image restore issue.

Here is another option. I think it would be worth your time to read a little. Better yet we have a tutorial by whs.

If all else fails this is another option.
I personally use Macrium Reflect.
