My Win 7 was installed in February 2010 and at first I could use System Restore without problems. However, after some time it stopped working due to unknown reasons and now when I try to do a System Restore it looks as if it is going to be OK, but when it restarts I see the following error message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800703f1)

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?

I tried to fix it by doing the following things:

1) Perform SFC /SCANNOW

it returns the following message:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

and nothing gets better regarding System Restore.

2) Do System Restore from Safe Mode:

This doesn't help at all, i.e. it returns the same message as always. "Repair Windows Install" option does not help either.

3) I tried to uninstall my antivirus program (Avira Antivir) because I read somewhere that antivirus programs can cause this error with system restore. Unfortunately it didn't help.

Does someone have an idea what I can do to enable System Restore again on my Win 7? I have a rather unpleasant problem with media files described in this thread and I'd hate to have to do a clean install of Windows 7 because of it alone.

All suggestions and help are welcome.

If sfc is saying it cant fix files, and repair install doesnt help you may be forced to do a clean install and hope one of the backups will work

Did you try a "Repair Install".

That is the same as an in place upgrade install.

Windows system restore has always been an iffy function. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Apart from the know problem with Norton in previous releases, I have never been able to get to the bottom of the problem. I therefore highly recommend to do frequent imaging - e.g. with free Macrium. That has never failed me in several dozen live recoveries (for real or for test and demo).

Well, I meant that when you turn on the PC and hold down F8 you can choose the first option (System Repair) which gets you into some sort of menu with 5 options. One of these options is System Restore. Others include memory check, command prompt and others. The whole thing looks like it has to be some sort of Safe Mode.

I tried System Restore from this menu and it didn't make any difference for my problem. (I get the same error after system restore is run from here but without the restart step - I think it merely logs off and on.)

No, actually I didn't try that yet. I will try tomorrow and hopefully it will fix this issue.
Thank you for the suggestion!

Something weird happened. About 3 days ago, I put the DVD with the windows 7 installation in my DVD ROM drive, left it in there for several hours... and the problem with the buzzing sound during media playback disappeared on its own.

How could this be? Unless Windows "knew" what it needed to find on the installation disc, I can't see how it could fix this issue?

I didn't start the repair procedure (yet). I don't know if the System Restore issue is now resolved as well.

Uuh!!

You stressed Windows 7 so scared to be reinstall, it swapped to non-buzzing sound media playback! :) The only probs that none will never know your real issue!

Well, I am certainly not "scared" to reinstal Windows 7 (I was the one who installed it on this PC in the first place after all). It's just a hassle.

But these two problems are really the main reason I was conteplating a Win 7 reinstall: buzzing sound in all media players and System Restore not working.

Media files (sound and video) ARE important to me because editing media files is my main job.

Nice job editing is, by the way!

entheogenic,

Get ready to perform a 100% clean install of Windows 7.

Microsoft never has fixed the problem of unreusable system restores.

As mentioned earlier, you only recourse against future disasters is making a 100% system image frequently.

This approach has saved me many times.

I have had nothing but total and complete success with the best free backup and restore software on the market, namely, that from Microsoft.

As stated, I have used this procedure many, many times with zero problems.

Here is the procedure:

CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISK
START | type System Repair | Enter key | Create Disk button
CREATE AND RESTORE A SYSTEM IMAGE
CREATE A SYSTEM IMAGE BACKUP
· START | type Backup your computer | Enter key
· In left-hand pane, select Create a System Image
· select where you want to save the backup | Next
· Select the drives you want to backup | Next
· Start Backup button
· Finish button after completion

RESTORE A SYSTEM IMAGE BACKUP
· Boot from the System Repair CD you created.
· Connect the external drive with the backup image
· NEXT button (change language if desired)
· Restore your computer using a system image
that you created earlier
radio button
· NEXT button
· Use the latest available system image radio button
· NEXT button
· Format and repartition disks checkbox
· NEXT button
· FINISH button
· YES button
CLONE A DISK
Yes, you can use the Create & Restore steps listed above when you want to replace your hard disk with one of same or larger size.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
If your using Norton Antivirus or internet security you have to uncheck tamper protection under Misc. settings or your system restore will not work. Also there is a setting in Avast that is similar that is causing the same problem. In Avast it's under settings, troubleshooting. There's an item called Enable Avast self defense module, it has to be unchecked.
