System restore fails. No files changed, but problem solved!?

I had a problem with some error-messages and wrong shortcuts, so I did a system restore. It failed and said, no files were changed, but that couldnt be, because my problems were gone. So I tried to turn back the restore (because I was afraid of a "failed system restore") with the same error message in the end, but my problems were back. So it definately isnt true when windows says no files were changed.

So I did a system restore again with the same result, but my problem is solved now.

So here the real questions:

Why windows says no files are changed, when they definately are? (does "files" mean registry also? It could be that I only had a registry Issue, that would be an answear)

Do I have to be seriously aware of any problems in the future because of a failed system restore? Even when all my problems are gone for now!? Even the windows systemfile-test does not show any problem.

It could very well be that it was just something minor in the registry that got corrected when you did the system restore. Even if it says the restore failed; its still possible that it corrected something.

I have seen this several times where System REstore says it did not complete yet the problem is resolved, sometimes allowing Win7 to boot when it wouldn't.

So I dont have to be aware of incoming problems because something is corrupt now? Can a failed system restore result in corrupt files? It doesnt make sense to me. Windows will replace a file or doesnt, thats all!? Can I let my pc in the current state (everything fine until now)? (sorry for my english, Im german ^^)

Let us know if you have any new issues.

You can run a few Startup Repairs to check over the boot files, then go over your install closely with Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will also help optimize and provide the tools and methods which work best with Win7 based on tens of thousands we've helped with here.

A "system restore" is a rollback to a restore point. Made either manually, just before patches installation, install/uninstall of program. It restores registry, exe, dll and some other system files. It's kind of a "go back in time" but only for system related stuff.

There is no such thing as a half system restore! It succeeds or it fails. If it fails,... it isn't committed and rollbacked automatically.

So I guess I only had a registry related problem? I already wrote that my problems where gone within a "failed" system restore and if I rolled this back (which also failed ^^) my problems were present again. So even if it said "failed" something was obviously changed/replaced.

But whatever, I have no problems so far and I guess everything is fine now. Just some registry issues which where fixed even with the failed restore.

Can you create another restore point and try a rollback to that point? Works?

Just an FYI; System Restore affects Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files created under any user account on your computer. System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos, so it cannot help you restore a deleted file. If you have backups of your files, you can restore the files from a backup.

No one else has mentioned it, with the exception of the above quote, but I suggest making frequent backups.
