System Restore fails

I recently updated my browser and accidentally deleted my profile with all my customizations and tweaks. I decided to revert back by doing system restore immediately. I have never had an issue before but for some reason it failed. "System Restore did not complete successfully (0x80070005)."
Since then I've tried every way I can think of to fix it:

• I've chosen at least half a dozen restore points,
• I've tried it in safe mode,
• I've tried with a clean boot,
• I've disabled all antivirus (though I have never done it in the past and restore always worked),
• I've tried SFC /scannow, CHKDSK /R and no issues,
• I've changed volume shadow copy to automatic in startup (though this never prevented a successful restore in the past)

I have no virus or malware .. and no matter what, I still get the error.

I worry that if I ever make changes more significant than browser version in the future I won't be able to correct it.. If there is anything I can do other than what I've done please let me know.

You might be able to find them and copy them out with shadowcopyview.

That assumes you know where to look.

Isnt that what you are trying to find?

If you know where they are usually kept in your running windows, then they will be in the same place in the shadow.

For example if I know my firefox settings are in
"C:\Users\SIW2\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla"

then in the shadow copy I would look for "\Users\SIW2\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla"

Assuming of course that shadowcopyview is able to find any shadow copies.

I suggest you do that first. Before attempting any fixes, which might delete any existing shadow copies.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding... losing my browser profile (I've since redone everything from scratch in terms of my preferences/CSS chrome tweaks) is what led to my discovering that system restore is not working.. I'd like to figure out why or how to fix it.. It used to work and I've tried everything I can think of (listed in my original post). {I will try to make this short: I prefer not to do a refresh or use the installation discs to fix it if I can help it because back in the day, when I had XP, I used the discs that came with my previous PC regularly with no issue but in the past when trying to use the provided discs with this PC/W7 I always had issues using them.}

I would have suggested a repair install.


If you dont want to do that there is another possibilty:

If you have a shadow copy from before the problem started , you can make an image of it. Then restore that image onto a different partition.

I have done it several times.

In the past I had no issues using discs for repairs but as I said, unfortunately, when I once tried to use the ones that I have for my current PC I had issues and am afraid to use them.. Regarding shadow copy: If you can elaborate (I'm not very tech savvy) on what that is that would be great. (I really have no way of knowing exactly when the problem started (if you're talking about the restore problem) because I haven't had to do it in a long while.. I just know I've done it in the past with no problem and when I tried to do it last week it failed no matter what I did... ) It's because I don't want to use the discs that I really worry that in the future I won't be able to restore any changes with system restore - if that makes sense.

open an administrator cmd prompt and type

vssadmin list shadows >c:\shadowlist.txt

(then press enter)

post up the contents of the c:\shadowlist.txt file

it will give a list of the shadow copies , the date they were made and the shadow copy volume name, which looks something like this:

\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1

dont be put off by the funny name thats what ms likes to call them

That is a better way to post it.

One thing is to try a system file check ( sfc ) if you havent already. The idea is it finds and fixes any broken system files.

Another possibilty is to find one of the shadows that was created before you had the problem.

For example

if you think this shadow copy was when everything worked fine, then you can capture it is as a .wim file.

sorry, that is way beyond my skills.. i know which date i wanted to restore to - how do i capture .wim file and implement it?
*but this doesn't fix the restore issue, it just restores it - so there is no way (aside from a repair install) to resolve why it's not restoring?

1. Make a wim image of the shadow copy that was created before the problem.

2. Apply that wim image to a separate partition. Fix the drive letter of the applied image. Add a boot menu entry for the applied image.

3. Boot into the applied image and the system you are booted into is as it was when that shadow copy was created.
