System Restore files

Hi.

I had a bad experience recently with a Windows update in W7. Can anyone tell me where user files and folders are likely to be relocated to for a System Restore?
Windows removed all my files and folders from the Library and Desktop after a lengthy update. No idea why it did this. A quick System Restore restored the files and folders to their positions prior to the Update. I need to know where relocated files are likely to be kept, so if it happens again, I will know where to look. Someone suggested Windows.old in C drive, however I do not have a file named Windows.old.

Not sure I am following this.

System Restore shouldn't have any effect on your personal files and folders or move them anywhere.

It might be that the Windows Update caused an error that temporarily prevented you from being able to view the folders containing your files. And that the System Restore corrected that problem.

Your files should be in the same place they always were. Most often, that is somewhere inside the C:\users\yourusername folder.

Or do you mean some type of Windows files rather than your personal files?

Just to clarify. I have had bad experiences with Windows Updates before, so don't have automatic updates. I manually started an update the other day and it took about half an hour to complete as the number of downloads were about 22 (I think). When my laptop re-started, the first thing I noticed was that the resolution on the desktop had dropped and all the files and folders (not Windows) on my desktop had gone. I looked in the Library folder (My Docs. My Music, My Pictures, My Videos), and all folders were empty. I tried a Search for a couple of files I knew the name of, with no success. So, I went to System Restore, and found a System Restore point had appeared that matched the time/date of the Update I had just done. After System Restore, all files, folders, and screen resolution were restored.

The worrying thing is why would Update do this? Where is Windows likely to store these files that vanished? The Library folder is the same as the Library folder in my username setting, so Windows did not move them from another user setting.
