erroring out on me and not restoring?

displaying a error code of :
0x80070005

the first advice is disable antivirus software and I did and rebooted and tried
again and still get same error code.

The main thing going on with my windows 7 laptop is that it boots
to the desktop and allows me to use the menu/programs, but on desktop all the programs
are gone?

any clue?

Try uninstalling your anti-virus software then boot into Safe Mode and see if you can use System Restore from there.

first response: no I have not done a full scan lately(maybe something there)

second response: maybe I can try that, will try a few other things first, I think, but unsure the whole problem came when installing some software from a site called 'gofree.com' but not so sure.

If the problem came with installing a software then it could easily be that your computer is infected. I would run a full virus scan.
