Hi forum,
This is the first major upset I have had with Win7.
Most of my restore points have vanished without my doing anything to effect
this..... most puzzling.
Could someone please advise me as to what might be wrong ?:sarc::eek:

It depends on how much space is allocated to the system restore. The more space the more restore points you'll have without them being deleted automatically. If there's not enough space to create a restore point sufficient for the latest point it will delete the oldest one from the points created..

You can adjust it by right clicking on my computer and opening system protection then configure and slide the bar to a larger percentage of space.

Thanks, seth500,
The slider was set to 1% (2.33gb) and I have now set it to a value of 56% (130gb). That is about half-way on the bar. Upon reflection, there may have been another reason why these points vanished. I have RevoUninstaller on my system and there is an Evidence Remover in this that can permanently delete files from the Hard Drive that have gone through the Recycle Bin. I used this for the first time a couple of days ago and this may have been the cause. Will be more careful in future.

There are many events that can delete the restore points - e.g. Disk cleanup, resize of shadowstorage, etc. If I were you, I would not trust the restore points and 56% of the disk is FAR too much space allocated for them. About 5 to 10% is ample.

A much safer method of protection is system imaging But do not use the windows native facility. That is iffy too. Macrium or Paragon are much better options.

I agree system restore when I use it is right after I have made a mistake that I have done to the system and not to far down the road because you could get some system problems with it that I have noticed with some programs. It's always best to have a clean image as whs has stated with the proper software. And always use the recommended restore as a ground rule, also 10% is what I have mine set to...:)

Yeah. Same here too. System image is best.
