System Restore

I have system protection on, but how can I make it do an automatic system restore daily? Or does it already do it daily? Basically I'm wondering if theres a way I can schedule this. Thanks!

Why do you want an automatic system restore? As far as I know, there is no native way to do this.

I think he means he wants to have a restore point made everyday, not restore to a point.

Window 7 will make 2 or 3 a week on its own.

It would be kind of pointless to make one daily. It would eat up a lot of space and the older ones would disappear if you didn't devote a lot of space to it.

Arbitrary daily points aren't of much use anyway. If your system hasn't changed in several days, what good does it do to have restore points for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday?

Better to make them manually when you are going to do something significant and to otherwise let Windows manage it, subject to the user controlling the drive space allotted to the function.

I don't think there's a way of doing it natively as JK said.

Use the Task Scheduler to run it at your desired time





P.S You'll need to unblock it in 'Properties', change compatibility to XP SP3 & Run as admin.

Sorry, I did state my question wrong. Airbot got it right. I was only curious because of the "Restore previous version" feature on files and folders lets you restore files based on when restore points have been created. So I'm more interested in creating restore points in case I lose a file or document and want to recover it. While I may not make system changes that often (2-3 weeks to automatically do it would be fine) I do work with files much more and was hoping that more restore points would mean more choices when it comes to recovering old versions.

Then in that case just set Windows to backup everyday.

how exactly does the backup work? i'm going to be buying an external soon and idk how big of one i need. does it take up as much space on the backup as it does on your regular hard drive or does it compress everything?

It seems to compress things. I have a 320GB as my main HDD and use a 500GB external as my backup drive. Suffice to say i've still got around 100GB free space (system image included).
Also worth noting is the backup are incremental, it'll only backup changes you make, not a fresh backup each time.
Don't forget to make a system image too whilst your at it

Increase the amount of HD space apportioned to System Restore in Computer>Advanced Tools>System Protection.

I keep it at 10%+ which seems to create more restore checkpoints and they hang around longer.
