System Restore

Hi, In another thread I have asked for help about slow startup. To try to diagnose the issue I will uninstall some programmes.

Before I do this I would like to understand more about System Restore.

I will create a restore point immediatly before unistalling a programme. If that programme is not a cause of the slow startup, will Windows then put the PC back to exactly the same configuration if I go back to that restore point. In effect it will be the same as if I had not unistalled the programme?

You may want to do a test before relying on System Restore putting back all of a program you uninstall.

From What is System Restore?:

"System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time."

Note it says system files. I don't believe this includes files installed for a program. SR will put the registry back so any entries in the registry for the program you uninstalled will be put back but if the uninstall deleted the files for the program from your hard drive, I do not believe SR will put them back.

Can anyone else comment on this? I don't want to steer ferrytrip1 wrong but don't want him to depend on SR for this if it won't work.

You're probably correct given the size of program files and the fact that I never tested that Games Live program, I just uninstalled it again. Each system restore file is a couple hundred megs, thats no where near large enough if you uninstalled say a 4gb game.

If you're looking to restore programs, just delete the program without deleting the preferences/user files, then when you reinstall it it'll still have your settings.
