I was wondering if there is a way for me to delete items in the notification area/system tray. For example, i had a program on my machine the utilized the system tray. now that i had uninstalled it, i looked into the "customize" option and the program is still listed even though it was already removed. The same thing for another program i used, i didnt install it, it was just a tool that when i extracted out of the zip folder, and clicked on the program icon, it hooks right into the OS (it was an OS enhancement). I deleted that folder since there was no real program to install. That notification is still listed in the "customize" menu.

I hope this is clear enough to describe for anyone who can help me. it isn't a real issue, but i like to keep things tidy on my computer and it just annoys me. Thanks!

Hi,

As these programs are appearing in the tray they are being started with windows. The best tool I know of for controlling this is Autoruns from Syinternals. The program does not need to be installed and is totally free to use. It can look a little daunting at first as it lists all programs which run at start up and in windows this can be quite a few ;)

Take a few minutes to read through the included help file and you should be able to find and remove the programs from starting.

I would advise that you first un-tick the application and run for a while to ensure that there are no side effects. Once this is proved OK you can right click and Delete the item permanently.

Hope this helps
