system wont boot with 8GB ram

hi all!
I'm trying to upgrade my Ram and have run into a brick wall! currently i have 2x 2GB Hynix strontium installed, I try and install the other 2x 2GB sticks in and system dead!
powers up, no POST or beep codes and monitor doesn't even bother powering up!

as far as i know i have the latest bios from gigabyte.
all DDR2 6400, all same brand sticks.. Gigabyte EP41-ud3l bios F4
so any ideas?

updated to F6 bios from Gbyte, system powers up, DOES NOT recognise extra 4GB tho..

the issue you got when you put down or upgrade your memory stick.. how is you use just 4GB,,that's the issue come?

issue arose when tried to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB Ram

yes im running a 64bit system, problem occurs at power on, bios detects only 4GB ram, then randomly reboots in BIOS or when win7 is booting.. starting to think Mobo is farked

Zant, most desktop boards can't handle high density memory. You'd need a buffered memory to be able to use high density memory... At least that's the safe way to ensure data integrity. I think your board can't handle 8GB without a buffer...

You probably have a bad stick of RAM. But it could be a faulty motherboard RAM slot.

To test: Remove all RAM sticks and mark them or arrange them to keep track of which stick is which (I cut up small sticky-notes). Install one stick at a time into RAM slot #1 and test. If it is a bad stick of RAM the system will not boot with that stick in slot 1. Replace the RAM.

If all the sticks test OK then you test for a bad slot in a similar way. Fill all the slots and then remove one at a time from each slot. You know your original 2 slots are good.

It is important that the new and old sticks match in specs, particularly voltage. Timings can be different, but it is best that they are close. All the RAM will run at the lower timings and forget about overclocking.

Hmmm, attached is the supported memory modules for your particular board.
My suggestion would be to update the chipset as your support page shows updates up to last month. I'm pasting the link for you.

Because of Intel chipset limitation, please use single-side memory module if four memory modules are to be installed.

Odds are it's the memory. The the motherboard is probably fine, but just doesn't like the new memory. Are they the same voltage as your current 4GB?

Download a copy of Memtest86 to test the RAM.

Generally if it's OK at the end of the 1st pass it should be fine. The only faulty RAM I've ever had showed up at 1st pass.

Also boot your mobo with no ram, wait for error tone and shut down. Reinstall memory and reset BIOS to defaults then restart again. If it all works ok shutdown windows and correct your BIOS settings if you need to. You may want to try this first.

it seems this main-board just have to master of module and you couldn't use 4x2G module of RAM I should say it's a damn thing on a mother board if you want have 8G of RAM you should by 2 module of 4G RAM and use them on the slot of 1 and 3 or one module of 8G RAM on the first module I should say congratulation to the GIGABYTE for this damn Architecture

Why not just try some simple troubleshooting? Pull your existing memory and put in the two new sticks. If the system boots and runs fine with those two installed, then chances are, the board can't handle 4 sticks of that kind of memory, and you'll have some options to think about once you return the new 4 GB.

I don't know what's worse....the incorrect, misleading suggestions, or wild baseless rants. Either way, they certainly aren't helping the OP get to the bottom of the issue.

Off topic, do you really think this was Gigabyte's decision? Anytime you mix modules or don't follow the motherboards guidelines (usually determined by the chipset), you run the risk of an issue. Gigabyte is one of the best, most reliable brands you can find. If you wish to avoid brands like this, you should probably stick to OEM systems and paying a large vendor to do the build for you.
