take ownership problem

I have downloaded a small file that is supposed to make a few changes to the Windows Registry.
My problem is that a number of folders are locked, since I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7.
This little "take ownership" registry file looks fine, there is a tutorial attached, etc. but my problem is that the file does not get merged into the Registry. The file gets opened in Notepad. and that is all

I need help how to let the Merge function work and the opening of the file in Notepad to be avoided.

Can anyone help, please?

Are you trying to have a take ownership feature in the context menu?

Yes, I am trying to add this to the right-click menu, but the same thing happens with the file you made a link to, as to the other files of the same nature, that I downloaded. When running the file, all that happens is that it gets opened in Notepad.

Have you tried running it as administrator . right click reg file and run as admin...

Sounds like a good idea, but right clicking the file doesn't give me the option "run as administrator". Right clicking the file gives me a dozen options, with MERGE highlighted, and the MERGE is the one that opnes the file in Notepad.

I cant understand why it doesn't open the run window when you double click the reg file ,
i gotta go for the evening now but hopefully we have kick started your thread .

Hello Torben, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like your REG file association is incorrect. Double check in Default Programs to make sure that the "Current Default" program for the .reg file extension is set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, see if you may be able to merge the downloaded REG file.

I managed to change the file association from Notepad to registry editor
I now have my "take ownership" n the right-click menu.
Absolutely phantastic. I know it should be an f, but I am just so thrilled.
