Talking Book - what format for older Portable CD player

My elderly Mother in law is nearly blind and listens to talking books she borrows from the Library on an old Portable CD/radio player.
I have tried to download some Free books for her from the Project Gutenberg Website but am unable to find a format that works on her player.
What format does a CD player use?
I have tried MP3 and .wav

I would check public domain audio books (LIBRIVOX) which are available here:

Usually WAV or MP3 should be the format
You could always try to download one and check what format they're in
I just see they offer MP3 and OGG (vorbis)

Chances are, if that's an old CD player, you can't just burn MP3 as Data files it wouldn't recognize them.Those old portables might need the Audio-CD Format CDA (which is essentially WAV)
What burning program do you use? You have to burn the MP3s as Audio CD !!!
If your Burning program doesn't do it and you don't want to invest into NERO try this one

Thank you, that worked.
I was trying to burn them as Data files using Ashampoo Burning Studio.
Used the option to record a Music CD and it worked.

Good I'm glad that worked
Those old portables were fabricated when MP3 wasn't even an issue yet
With a little luck the player can handle CD-RWs that way you could keep the amount of CDs at bay

This one can use CD-rewrites but a lot of older ones Can't.
