Task scheduler not running??????

My daughter has an HP laptop that she uses in nursing school. It started acting funny and I found a bunch of junk on the computer that she says she doesn't know where it came from.

But me problem is that automatic updates has stopped working along with the disk defag. When I try to run the defag I get a message that says that the task scheduler is running, to start it.

When I go into the task scheduler and try to get it to run on the computer the console is on, I get a message that says "cannot connect to remote computer".

Also security essentials quit working and when I try to update it I get a message that says

Microsoft Security Essentials-not responding

Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated

This app couldn't check for virus and spyware definition updates. Check your internet of network connection and try again

But both are working because I can get on the internet and browse.

So, what gives? Thanks.

Run the AV and spyware scans, test System files, clean up browser add-ons, uninstall anything you didn't install in Control Panel, establish a Clean Boot, use System Resources from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7. Report back results.

If PC is too infected to run the scans successfully, use the bootable AV's and repairs from Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start until it is stable enough to complete the steps in Windows.
