I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, and it has a feature that I want to suppress. Namely, when I hover the pointer over one of the boxes in the taskbar, a little window pops up showing something of the content of the program the box points to. I want to suppress this. I recently saw a name for it in something I was reading, but I can't remember it. Anyone know how to do this?

Hi,

There's been several ways to do what you want, disable aero, use grpedit to turn off taskbar previews and there is a tutorial to add a reg key to ExtendedUIHoverTime, see option 4 step 2 to workaround the hover time by extending it so it doesn't show by the time you've left the area, but they don't seem to work or don't work for long. You might have some luck with the tweaker in the first option 7+ taskbar tweaker, in the taskbar section you can shut off all hovering.

If all else fails this might be what you're looking for: Ultimate Windows Tweaker 2.2 go to the personalization page and at the bottom under taskbar there's a check to disable balloon tooltips.
  • A few things are confusing. You say this is for 7 HP but you have 7Pro listed in your specs? Do you have both?
  • A minor point but you've marked your thread solved, you could un-mark it until you do solve it.
  • And, was balloon tooltips the phrase you were looking for?

Thank you for the helpful information. It is more than I need!

To answer your questions:

: I have upgraded from 7Pro 32-bit to 7HP 64bit

: I marked it solved because one reader recommended placing the taskbar at the top of the screen. This works well, but I will try some of the other methods.

: I don't recall where "balloon tooltips" came from. No matter.

Thanks again.

You're welcome!

Going to x64 is an upgrade, shame you couldn't stay with pro. It would help if you'd update your OS listing in your system specs...

I saw the moving the bar to the top but for me that would be a bigger irritant than the balloons, I'm mostly, but not quite used to firefox's "tabs on top".
One gets used to a certain way and then for no apparent reason they go and change it. I believe it's the 'ol supply and demand as most sheeple are using these "smart phones" and the OS needs to be re-developed around the phones.

Yea, no matter. One thing I notice is when people try to describe what's happening, ya have to watch because of the difference between thumbnail previews and the balloons.
