Taskbar scrambled after malwarebytes scan

Ran a full malwarebytes scan last night (which I usually try to do monthly, in addition to automated MSE scans) ... no recent issues (for months) until suddenly today my task bar is all messed up; most (if not all) icons point to the wrong place (including "nowhere useful"). E,g. the taskbar icon that goes to Chrome has a Windows Media Player icon.

How to fix?? Laptop stable for a long time (months if not years until yesterday).

Do I have to rebuild my task bar from scratch?

(update) It looks like it's the task bar *icons* that are screwed up; do I need to rebuild the task bar, one item at a time, using the icon labels as a roadmap?

Is there a folder/file somewhere that can tell me what taskbar icons I had, so I don't have to re-invent multiple years of configuration?

Hello Bill,

You could take a screenshot of your taskbar to know which apps you have pinned to it.

Afterwards, you could reset and clear all pinned items on the taskbar by using the tutorial below. You will have to manually pin each item back to the taskbar though, but the screenshot above will help make it easier.

If everything is working fine again when finished, you can use the tutorial below to be able to backup and restore your pinned taskbar items as needed in the future.

thanks, will try that

Thanks for that suggestion, I'll try that...

I'm less-than comfortable with making a boatload of screenshots (esp. since I can't just print them - Murphy's law: no working printer) but the approach makes sense.

Decided since I don't have that many items, to just try delete-and-AddBack, one-by-one ... but that's not working. The expected icon isn't appearing, some other icon does.

AND ... it's not -just- the icon in the toolbar apparently; I notice that the Start Menu entry for the item also has the wrong icon. Help?

So, since there are only about 10... How do I get the proper icon to be used when I do the add-back step? Have I messed up something else inadvertently?
