Hi all.... I'm having a problem with my taskbar and start menu- I can't unlock the taskbar or pin anything on the start menu.... also, I noticed in Control Panel, it comes up in category view, I try to change to small icons, and it won't let me- it will go to large icons, but not small.

Anybody have any ideas- I'm at my wit's end ( which, I grant you, isn't a far trip)

Do you just have the normal Windows 7 installation, or are you using other programs,( third party applications), as well?

Some Malware programs can cause various strange behaviour. Download this;

Malwarebytes

And run it. Tell us what it says.

Reset the Star Menu settings, and try

Right click Start menu Orb -> Properties -> Start Menu -> Customize -> Use Default Settings. Done

Well, that's a good start. It is likely that some of this malware has changed your settings. Let me have a think for a minute or two and I will get back to you..........

In the meantime you can simply try resetting your start menu to default settings;

Somebody else may also chime in with a solution in the meantime.

So, some malware messed up your taskbar settings, as hangdawd suggested, its better to move on to a new account.

Does the Taskbar Lock item is grayed out, did you tried to unlock it from the Registry?

Run -> regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Policies -> Explorer

In the right-pane, delete the LockTaskbar value, and quit Registry Editor

You need to restart your system fro this changes to take effect.

Do you have a restore point or backup image that predates the problem? You might try using chkdsk /r, System Maintenance Troubleshooter, sfc /scannow, or any other maintenance diagnostic that you may think of. When it comes to third party diagnostics, there are so many that it would be difficult to create a list of them.
