Another problem with the taskbar of Windows 7 seems to be that I can't seem to pin Internet Explorer to the taskbar properly. I have pinned it, but instead of the icon remaining on the taskbar as an icon, it "turns into an active window" (hoping I'm explaining it clearly) once I click on it to launch Internet Explorer. That means that every time I want to open a consecutive Internet Explorer window to go to another site simultaneously with previously opened web sites, the icon is gone and I have to go to the Start Menu. In other words: it is not really pinned to the task bar. This does not happen with previous Windows versions.
Is there a solution for this (other than tabs because they don't work for me).
thanks,
IJmir

I assume you are using IE v.8 == You don't need to open a second instance of Internet Explorer. Just click on the tab to right of the "Favorites" and you have two windows open. This is easier on your system resources and more convienent.

It is NOT more convenient. I will decide for myself what I find convenient, thank you. As I already explained Tabs don't work for me at all. If you are writing in a word document using information from 2 different web sites, you now have to do 2 actions every time: click the Internet Explorer on the task bar and then find the right tab. Without tabs, I can click on the right window in the task bar straight away. Now that IS convenient! Pinning Internet Explorer to the task bar works fine on the 2003 version, so why not on version 7. If you hold down the shift key while clicking the IE taskbar icon it will open a second instance of IE instead of another tab.

That also works with the folder icon (Libraries/Explorer), and probably a few others.

Middle click also opens a new window. The middle click is usually the mouse wheel.

I'd normally never know that, I usually program my middle button/ scroll wheel as a back button. My new trackball has a dedicated back button so thats nice to know, thanks.

Same thing when inside your browser. When you click on a link it'll either open in a new tab or window

Two more methods:

1) Right click on the 'active' icon and choose Internet Explorer. A new window will open.

2) Left click on the icon, and, holding down the left mouse button, drag upward. The jump list will appear and you can, again, choose Internet Explorer for the new IE to open.

Great advice, James!

A lot of people forget about, or don't know about, the "click and hold the left button and drag up" functionality when it comes to the task bar.

Again, thanks! :)

If we really want to get fancy press and hold shift, then win key, then whatever number your icon appears in to launch a new window.

So if IE is my first icon on my taskbar it's: shift + win key + 1

;)

Edit: To launch a program that isn't open you can press win key + the number of spaces your icon is from the start orb

Thanks, ie9! :)

It really is amazing how much utility is built into the Win 7 task bar.

I appreciate the information that you and others are presenting about it. Hey, we all started somewhere and none of us have our brains wired to the code in Win 7 ... well, except maybe ... Brink and John (among others). ;)

You're welcome Mike.
