Teamviewer scam - beware

There is an easy solution for this type of scam...don't answer the phone, unless you know the person calling (Caller ID). As for whether a person deserves to be scammed due to their own ignorance, if that were true, then everybody deserves what ever comes their way, because we all are ignorant in one way or another. Evil definitely loves the opportunities that ignorance provides, but wisdom only curbs, not eliminate it. To not feel any compassion for the ignorant only displays a lack of wisdom of our own.

Keeping your personal details safe can be quite hard. esp. when companies you're registered with (for whatever reason) add clauses to their confidentiality policy, allowing them to sell information on. Just entering an online competition can be enough to get your details known by various advertising companies :/

Be careful where you give away your personal information too and read their terms and conditions (specifically data retention and sharing clauses.)

I have received this calls several times over the last few months and ignored it, but last week they asked for me by my maiden name?? its unusual so I found that strange, still I hung up, but today I received another asking again by my married name, I only moved house a month ago, new phone number, so how are they getting these details???? the woman said I had filled out some form when I bought my computer, I didn't. she did give me a call back number in Queensland if I changed my mind.

I want them to phone me so I can rip it into them! strangely I love getting phone calls trying to sell me stuff, had one a while ago about compensation about a car crash went something like this

caller- Hi I'm iuhdahdosahdoas from iuhafodashof, So I hear you had a car crash, just phoning to see if are intilted to any compensation,
me- ok.....
them- so during this accident was anybody injured or hurt?
me- nope
them- oh, well if you claim you can get upto £15,000
me- ok, but no one was hurt
them- but you could get 15k
me- right so Ive told you no one was hurt but your pressuring me into taking out a claim lying about it to get 15k and your probably gonna get a nice bonus from selling.... isnt that fraud?
them- erm erm erm

hangs up

computer reapirs are the pretty bad aswel! the mrs's laptop went all funky a while ago, just needed to reinstall windows, I diddnt have the time to do it so she said she would take it to get it reapired, took it in they said it needed a new hard drive, so she came back and told me, so I went in and whats wrong with the hard drive so they said it just needs replacing because its 'died' so I turned around and said look the hard drives fine, I did a chkdsk the other day and its fine, just reinstall windows! as soon as they know you know what your chatting about there on it, but unfortunately some take advantage of others lack of knowledge! bit of a shame really!

just shows how desperate some people are to make money, install a virus or steal peoples bank details!

Just had one right now. They phrased it as if I am causing problems for them and I'll benefit with securing my privacy from random data sending.

He called telling me my computer is sending random packets to servers which is causing blocks on their end and guided me through the event viewers for red and yellow errors then told me to google teamviewer.

Teamviewer. Remote access. End of line. Full stop.

So I began asking which server I am sending to and details for when was the last time my error were sent they claimed another technical department had those infos. Nor were they willing to give me a callback number.

It always seem like there's activity going on in the background with lots of people talking which makes it seem somewhat legit. I usually think it's just a few people in a basement with a recording playing in the back ground but it's likely a lot of people in a basement trying to scam lots more victims.

I hope google and other search engines would show scam warning as first result for searches on anything technical.

I've just had an asian man call me trying this crap, i hadn't heard of this scam but i have some computer knowledge so thought it sounded dodgy from the start. He told me i have a Trojan and he needs to transfer some software to optimise my hard drive, outlook & internet explorer backup software and virus removal software by logging on to teamviewer.com. i asked him questions he didn't seem to have answers to so put me through to his 'manager' stating he had explained it 10 times to me and i was making him feel like he wasn't good enough!!! lol!!

His manager got my name wrong and then refused to repeat the name he had just said then put me on hold to find the correct surname. He did give me the company name though: Online PC Genius, he had previously said Online Data Genius and changed his mind. I got the call back number of 020 3026 9827 which matches up with the website of the former company name......

So who do i report these scumbags to?!

My S/O uses Win7 and just got popped by the Teamviewer scam. This was a group out of the Bronx NY called Windows Solutions. She DL'd the viewer, but how can one be sure we got ALL of the spyware out?? Windows Defender isnt much of a program... Would MBAM or CC Cleaner do better???

The problem is not with Teamviewer. That is good software but it is also used by scammers who call you and say that there are errors on your computer which they can fix. They then use Teamviewer to access your computer and steal sensitive data.

Thanks kado Yeah mate I suppose it's like letting a dodgy real estate agent case your joint and making notes or leaving listening devices around.

It's that sort of stuff that you would not be aware of that would give me the creeps. But I suppose if your security is good it'll pick it up on a scan eh? Thing is witha weekly full scan set it could do a lot of damage for say a week after it got implented I suppose the only thing to do is to do a scan straight after.

Having said that I only us it with people I can trust. ;)

How do they get my name?

I've literally just hung up from one of these calls, after google-ing what they were telling me to download before doing it.

The thing is, my laptop does have serious issues, I do report errors to Microsoft, and he had my name. It just didn't seem legit to me though. I very much doubt microsoft actually call people up like that.

However, does being ex-directory help avoid these calls? I figure they got my name alongside my number in the phone book. :S
Thanks!

Hi aqualouise and welcome to Seven Forums. It sound very much like the Team Viewer scam to me. I have had more than one of these calls so you did the right thing. Not sure how they get their numbers but ex-directory will help. The problem now is they have your number so it may be that it won't do much good to go ex now.

You mentioned that your laptop has issues. Please start a new thread with these and the experts here will do their best to help you.

Yes it was a scam of some kind. They can get many peoples' numbers from a simple Google or a Zaba search, Spokeo is another way. If they call again, keep them tied up as long as possible but DO NOT download anything they suggest. At the end tell them you are using Linux. :)
