Terrible wireless performance

Recently moved my PC into another room within the house on the same floor.

I have a wired connection to my main PC using a TP-Link adsl router.

My 2nd PC and Xbox are wireless and can connect to the home network but the network performance has gone down massively.

I guess options to improve are;

1) Add different arials - not sure of effectiveness
2) Wireless repeater - no idea how to set this up. I have read guides but they do not make sense to me
3) Move the router back to where it was before - would have to run a long network cable to it? Can this be tested without moving the cable and just have teh phone line plugged in?

Any other tips to improve?

1-wouldnt help.

2-would help and is easy to do.

3-dont move it.


Can you answer some basic questions?

did they ever work correctly?

Does the speed stay the same when booting into safemode (F8) with networking?

Are you using "homeegroup"?

you could try using a different wireless channel. maybe your neighbours' networks are working on the same frequency as yours, causing interference and poor performance.

you'll need to go into your router settings to change this.

I have tried a different channel and this improved only slightly but not enough to make much difference. When I run the Xbox network performance graph it is still down to about 4 bars out of about 12

did they ever work correctly? Yes at the previous location the performance was great and the bars mentioned above were at maximum

Does the speed stay the same when booting into safemode (F8) with networking? - Not tried will do

Are you using "homeegroup"?- yes - using Win 7

Will try the safe mode - could this be because the router is positioned near an external wall

You could try this if you're feeling cheap:

Though the material I used was a bit different (Just a parabolic shaped piece of aluminum tin), it worked GREAT. My signal strength increased anywhere from 200-400%.

The idea is to point the reflector towards the room you want the signal to beam through as it tries to focus most of the radio signal in that general direction. Trust me, I guarantee it'll work much better unless your room is behind several brick walls.

Worth a try - will do will also work on moving the router around in my room to see if that helps

You can also change the routers channel and see if that helps. Portable phones and other devices can confuse the strength of reception.

think I fixed it - I moved the router around the room and the signal strength seems to have got better - just need to get a slightly longer cable so the router isnt on the floor in the middle of the room

I replaced HDD on my Asus U6Sg with a Crucial SSD solid state drive. Wireless signal went from one/two bars to four/five bars. Real transformation. I assume removal of HDD got rid of electro magnetic effect of the HDD drive motor and the head positioning motor, improving signal to noise ratio. Now my laptop is the best peformer I have ever experienced
