Hi, not sure if this is in the right place on the forum but here goes..... I recently bought a dual band "N" wireless modem / router as I thought since all the PCs and laptops are now N capable, I may as well upgrade for not a lot of outlay however on further digging it looks like none of them are on the 5GHz band so I set the router to 300Mbs at 2.4GHz but the best I can achieve in a modern detached house is 144Mbs even in the next room to the router. Does this mean that the wireless NICs are not capable of 300Mbs or do I need to do anything e.g. optimization to achieve this value - I appreciate it will drop with distance and obstacles but only a few meters away I was expecting better ?

I'm not overly bothered about this, it is more curiosity than anything else.

Thanks.

I am not sure about the 5Ghz, I cant get my N cards to work with that either on my router, but if you want 300mb go into your settings and use 20/40 or the 40 bandwidth, default is 20, thats your only getting half speed

300mb is a theoretical limit , the most you can acheive would be 270mb if you are lucky :(

I recently did the same, but our home has a mix of g and n nics and I've found that certain models are only capable of outputting certain speeds. So certain cards could be limited. For example my dad's laptop which is a wireless N nic is getting 270mbps while my brothers wireless N is only getting 150 mbps. I'm direct so I get the full 1Gbps.
